Definition
  • OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Agency)
    defines workplace violence to include abusive
    language, intimidation, assault, fighting or
    other violent acts displayed by employees,
    co-workers, management, patients, visitors, or
    other parties which may cause emotional or
    physical intimidation or harm.

  • New Hanover Health Network has a zero tolerance
    of a threatening environment.
  • Take all threats seriously.
  • If you are on the 17th. Street or Cape Fear
    campus and you are in immediate danger, call a
    Code Strong. If you are on an off site location
    - dial 9-911.
  • Report all violence in the workplace.
  • Complete a Threat Reporting Form.

  • Increasing number of mentally ill patients being
    released without follow up care
  • Distraught family members
  • Frustrated patients due to long waits
  • Drug/alcohol abusers
  • Low staffing

  • This is the most frequent cause of death for
    women on the job and the second for men.
  • OSHA determined that 51 of workplace violence
    occurs in medical and/or social service settings.

    emotional energy which occurs after a person has
    acted out. Person regains rationality

  • Domestic violence is any type of physical,
    sexual, verbal or emotional abuse that is done
    against an intimate partner by another intimate
    partner.
  • 74 of victims are harassed by their partners at
    their workplace.
  • Domestic violence is the leading cause for female
    homicides (death) at the workplace.

Domestic Violence Victims
  • Employee victims, who have restraining orders for
    the workplace and/or who feel unsafe at work are
    to notify Special Police so security measures can
    be taken while at work.
