What is a Conic Section?
  • Conic Section- (noun) a curve formed by the
intersection of a plane with a right circular
cone and ellipse, a circle, etc.
  • http//math2.org/math/algebra/conics.htm

3
Parabola
  • Parabola- (noun) a plane curve formed by the
intersection of a right circular cone with a
plane parallel to a generator of the cone.
  • Standard formx24py
  • x2-4py y24px y2-4px

4
Circle
Circle- a closed plane curve consisting of all
points at a given distance from a point within it
called the center. Standard Form-
x2y2r2 http//math2.org/math/algebra/conics.htm
5
Ellipse
The vertices for this type of ellipse is (/- a,
0). The co-vertices are (0, /-b).
http//math2.org/math/algebra/conics.htm
  • Ellipse- all points found by keeping the sum of
the distances from two points (each of which is
called a focus of the ellipse) constant.
  • Standard form
  • x2/a2y2/b21

6
Ellipse cont.
  • The standard form for this type of ellipse is
  • x2/b2y2/a21

The vertices for this type of ellipse is (0,/-
a). The co-vertices are (/-b, 0).
7
Hyperbola
  • Hyperbola-the set of points in a plane whose
distances to two fixed points in the plane have a
    constant difference.
  • Standard Form-
  • y2/a2-x2/b21.
  • http//math2.org/math/algebra/conics.htm

8
Hyperbola cont.
  • The standard form for this type of hyperbola is
    x2/a2-y2/b21.
