Part I Soil Profiles
  • Students will be able to see a soil profile
either from pictures on a PowerPoint or from an
actual soil core taken near their school.
  • Students should look at and feel the differences
between the soil horizons and if the core has not
    been disturbed, notice clear distinctions.

Part II Soil Textures
  • Soil texture is very important when classifying
soils, and mineral particles range in size
    throughout different soils.
  • Particles are either defined as
  • Sand
  • Silt
  • Clay

Soil Triangle

Part II Soil Textures
  • Students will engage different soil types through
a guided inquiry lab and classify according to
    texture.
  • Students will be guided to observe by sight and
touch each of the soil samples (ideally 9-12
    samples) and record observations
  • Then back at their desks, students will try to
classify the soils they encountered from their
observations (using their own dichotomous key)

12
Part II Soil Textures
  • After students do their own classification, the
teacher will discuss with the students why they
chose to group certain soils together.
  • Then students will be shown the soil triangle and
told about the three soil particles and their
    sizes.
