QoS Issues in Wireless LAN
Jian Zhang
  • Integrate Servive
  • Admission Control
  • Mobile RSVP (Talukdar A.)
  • Differentiate Service
  • Hierarchical QoS architecture (J.Antonio)
  • Enhanced QoS architecture(Indu Mahadevan)
  • Ad hoc (MANET)

2
Mobile Reservation Issues and Solution
  • request for the entire connection time, no matter
    handoff
  • make advance resource reservation at the multiple
    locations it may possibly visit
  • admission control
  • mobile RSVP

3
Admission Control
  • Fixed strategy fixed percentage of AR capacity
    for handover connection
  • Static strategy reserve a fraction of AR
capacity for each possible traffic class,
    fraction calculated from historical traffic
  • Dynamic strategy adapt capacity reservation
based on connections in the neighbouring cells

4
Mobile RSVP
  • MSPEC the set of locations the mobile node will
visit during the connection. (a mobile node can
specify its own MSPEC, either from the network or
    from its mobility profile )
  • A mobile makes active reservation from its
current location and passive reservation from the
    other locations in its MSPEC
  • 3 service classes
  • Mobility Independent Guarantees
  • Mobility Independent Predictive
  • Mobility Dependent Predictive

QoS Issues in Wireless LAN
  • Integrate Servive
  • Admission Control
  • Mobile RSVP (Talukdar A.)
  • Differentiate Service
  • Hierarchical QoS architecture (J.Antonio)
  • Enhanced QoS architecture(Indu Mahadevan)
  • Ad hoc (MANET)

6
Hierarchical QoS architecture
  • Global QoS Management Edge router QoS_POLITY
(bandwidth, admission control, traffic class in
    one cell)
  • Local QoS Management Access router QoS_CONFIG
(EF rate, AF/BE rate, AF weight)
  • Need QoS signaling
  • In-band, piggyback data packet, QoS_request,
    handoff
  • Out-band, ICMP packet, QoS_policy, QoS_config

7
Hierarchical QoS architecture (continue)
  • Edge router set policy of access routers
  • In-band request from mobile
  • Out-of-band config by access router

8
Enhanced QoS architecture
  • Mobility allocate a small percentage of the
    bandwidth for handoff
  • High loss rate the receiver periodically sends
feedback, BS creates a compensation class and
    reallocate to lossy receiver temporarily
  • Low bandwidth reducing traffic at BS by flow
    control
  • Power constrain handling battery power level
periodically sent to the BS, mobile DSCP is
    remarked

QoS Issues in Wireless LAN
  • Integrate Servive
  • Admission Control
  • Mobile RSVP (Talukdar A.)
  • Differentiate Service
  • Hierarchical QoS architecture (J.Antonio)
  • Enhanced QoS architecture(Indu Mahadevan)
  • Ad hoc (MANET)

10
QoS issues in Ad hoc (MANET)
  • Ad hoc wireless network
  • no network infrastructure
  • dynamically changed topology
  • self-create, self-organize, and self-administer
  • MANET QoS is open research area
  • QoS-aware Routing a path from a source to the
destination that satisfies the needs of the
    desired QoS

11
Core Extraction Distributed Ad Hoc Routing
  • Core extraction minimum dominating set of the ad
hoc network, maintains the local topology,
    perform route computations
  • Link state propagation propagates the link
states of stable high-bandwidth links to the core
    nodes
  • Route computation first establishes a core path
from the source to the domain of the destination
satisfying the requested bandwidth. This node
then becomes the source of the next iteration.

12
Conclusion
  • Wireless local area networks provide many
advantages compared to the wired network, a large
number of QoS enhancement schemes have been
    proposed
  • Reservation protocol mechanism integrated with
    wireless LAN
  • Extending DiffServ to wireless LAN provides
    consistent end-to-end QoS behaviour
