Community Builders
I think Community Builders is to get to build
your community up. I also think it is for meeting
people. It is for becoming friends and to know
what senior citizens are like, what college kids
are like, to know what high school kids are like,
to know what kids your age are like, and to know
what kids younger than you are like in your
community.

Travelers, I learned one idea of what a community
is by being born into the fifth generation of my
mother's family to live in the same farming
community. I have sometimes said that I did not
have friends instead I had relativesgreat-grandp
arents, great uncles and aunts, grandparents,
uncles, aunts, first cousins, second cousins,
etc., and I even learned what a first cousin once
or even twice removed was because they were real
people with whom I had those relationships. In
addition, I was taught to call other kids'
grandparents Grandma Ellis, Grandpa Smith, etc.
Even though I live alone in Waverly, I think that
I have created relationships with friends that
are parallel to the ones that I had with
relatives while I was growing up. Of course,
another definition of "community" can include
what we sometimes call our "church family" or our
"school family" or our "work family," and the
longer we live, the broader the circle of
community becomes. I chose the picture of
flowers because I am a gardener and because it
can symbolize how even if a group is only one
race, our personalities and talents are different
"colors," and the more variety we have, the more
interesting becomes the picture that we make. I
am sorry that I traveled so much away from our
Neighborhood 17 community as I wish I could be a
grandpa or uncle or at least a cousin to all of
you! Carl, Senior
117
Community Builders has shown me that people are
very unique. We all have different perspectives.
However, we have things in common as well. The
people in our neighborhood have done a lot of
traveling around the United States and the
World. We could share our stories with each
other about what we have seen and done. By being
an intergenerational group, we bring lots of
different ideas. That is very important!
