Bowness Hockey Program (BHP)
  • Goals
  • To offer a comprehensive school hockey program
    for young men and women to become successful
    student athletes.
  • 2. To offer athletes a superior hockey program
    balanced with the opportunities and
    responsibilities of every student at Bowness High
    School.

BHP Descriptors
  • Students in the BHP are treated first as students
    at Bowness High School and secondly, as athletes
    enrolled in the BHP.
  • All school rules apply
  • All graduation expectations apply including the 4
    special Bowness criteria. (Alberta Learning,
    Community service, School Involvement, Portfolio)
  • BHP is a scheduled class
  • Each class is offered once a day.
  • A typical week could include 3 ice times and 2
    in-class sessions

BHP Descriptors continued
  • A Bowness teacher will supervise all BHP
    activites.
  • Students would be expected to take all other
    classes at Bowness High School.
  • Pride and Excellence is the school credo. It is
    expected that all BHP students will exhibit these
    qualities in all aspects of school life.
  • Possible opening enrolment Sept. /06. Minimum
    22 athletes to a maximum of 36 athletes.
  • All ice times and BHP classes will be scheduled
    in the morning.
  • Arrangements will be made for students to write
    the PSAT exam in grade 10 and the SAT exams in
    grade 11 and 12.

Dynastars aspect of BHP
  • Dynastars is a hockey program that has been in
    operation since 1989 in the Calgary area.
  • Dyanstars has been affiliated with the Calgary
    Board of Education for the last five years with
    other schools.
  • The Philosophy of Dynastars is The development
    of Life Skills through Hockey. Major emphasizes
    at the BHP will be
  • - Responsibility
  • - Discipline
  • - Hard Work

Dynastars aspect of BHP Cont
  • Athletes will be evaluated four times during the
    school year which will correspond with academic
    report cards.
  • Cost is 2,500.00 This will include ice time,
    instructor wages, transportation and athletic
    gear.
  • Dynastars Hockey Director Dave Smith, and the
    assigned Bowness High teacher, monitor students
    academic progress during the year.
  • Dynastars off ice sessions will be partnered with
    the National Sports Development program at the
    north campus.

Who can apply?
  • The program is open to young men and women in
    grades 10, 11 and 12.
  • First Priority is given to students in the CBE
    who reside in the Bowness High School designated
    areas.
  • Second Priority is given to students who reside
    in CBE Area 1. ( N.W. Calgary)

Criteria for Selection into BHP
  • Not first come first served.
  • Many factors are considered including
  • - Hockey position, eg. goalie
  • - Hockey ability, attitude and skill level
  • - Academic ability and attitude.

  • Letters of reference
  • Letter of application (written by student)
  • 500 deposit
