All about a Tudor house

Inside a rich persons house
  • Inside the house of a rich person you would find
lots of rooms. There would be several rooms in
the attic. You would normally have three parts.
Everyday people would pray in a special room, it
was like a very small church. They called it The
chapel. People would have lots of portraits of
famous people like the King and his family or
    Shakespeare.

Inside a poor persons house
  • Inside a poor persons house you probably
wouldnt have an attic. Some very poor people
would live in one room and sometimes the mother
and father would have as many as seven or eight
children living with them in the one room. Some
houses had a partition in one corner of the room
just enough for the mother and father to sleep
in. If there were two floors then the ground
floor would have a kitchen at one end and the
other end would be for animals.

The windows and doors of a Tudor house
  • Wealthy Tudors would have had glass in their
windows. The glass would be made in very small
panes held together with strips of lead. Not so
wealthy people would only have shutters. The
windows usually had black or brown beams and were
very small. The most striking window treatment
to emerge in the Tudor period is the oriel and
    projecting multi-sided window cantilevered out
from an upper floor and supported on a bracket or
    corbel from beneath.

In Tudor times the doors were very small. They
were normally made out of wood

The chimneys of a Tudor house
  • The chimneys were very tall and were usually
clustered in groups. Individual chimney columns
were curved, twisted, and decorated with
    checkerboard patterns of different coloured
bricks. There were lots of chimneys because there
was at least one fireplace in each and every room.

Materials used to make a Tudor house
Thatch
White washed wattle and daub
  • If you were buying materials for your house and
you were a wealthy person you would use brick for
the walls. If you were not so wealthy you would
use stone for the walls instead or wattle and
daub. A wealthy person would use clay tiles or
lead for the roof but a poor person would have
    thatch.
