Title: APPM 2460 Diff' Eq' Computer Lab

1
APPM 2460Diff. Eq. Computer Lab
  • Writing Workshop I

2
Why Write?
  • Compositions in writing are perhaps not given
sufficient prominence I am told that insistence
on such compositions would close the door to very
good pupils who know their subject and understand
it very well, and yet are incapable of applying
    it in the smallest degree

3
Why Write?
  • ...Such pupils understand only in the first sense
of the word, and we have just seen that this is
not sufficient to make either an engineer or a
geometrician. Well, since we have to make a
choice, I prefer to choose those who understand
    thoroughly.
  • -Henri PoincarĂ©

  • No complicated equations or problem background
  • Outline of paper and tools used

9
Organization
  • Body
  • Main part of the report
  • All required qualitative and quantitative results
  • Contains prose, equations, and graphics
  • Divided into sections with headings
  • Look for logical places to make divisions

10
Organization
  • Conclusion
  • Restate the primary conclusions
  • Brief but comprehensive
  • Need not be too technical
  • A place for general comments and reflections

11
Organization
  • Appendix
  • A place to put extra material too lengthy for the
    body
  • Examples Extra graphs, lengthy calculations
  • All data in appendix should be referred to in
    main body
  • No major conclusions in appendix! Appendix
should be able to be torn out and the paper still
    makes sense
