Title: Silly Yak Disease

1
Silly Yak Disease
  • Ariana Berlin

2
Celiac Disease
  • Other names
  • Celiac sprue
  • Gluten-sensitive enteropathy
  • Nontropical sprue
  • Coeliac sprue
  • Endemic sprue
  • Gluten intolerance

3
Mode of Inheritance
  • This is a genetic disease
  • It is located on the short arm of the sixth
    chromosome
  • It is autosomal recessive
  • Approximately one out of every 133 people have
celiac. However, only 3 of these people have
    been diagnosed

4
Punnett Square
  • Because this disease shows incomplete penetrance,
somebody who has celiac may not have the allele
and somebody who has the allele may not have the
    disease.

5
Symptoms of the Disorder and Detection
  • Stomach cramping and bloating
  • Increasing appetite
  • Back pain
  • Constipation
  • Dehydration
  • Diarrhea
  • Energy loss
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle
  • cramping
  • Dry skin
  • Weight loss
  • Depression

6
Detection
  • There is no way to detect the disease before
    symptoms appear
  • It is impossible to know if somebody is a carrier
    because of incomplete penetrance

7
Diagnostic Testing
  • First, they have a physical examination, which
includes a series of blood tests. Second, a
duodenal biopsy is performed with many samples
from multiple locations in the small intestine.
Third, the gluten-free diet is started. When the
symptoms subside and the small intestine returns
to its normal, healthy state, then the diagnosis
    of Celiac is confirmed.

8
Prognosis
  • Celiac is not necessarily life threatening unless
a gluten-free diet is not started and the stomach
does not stops being able to work properly
  • The only known treatment is a gluten free diet

9
Current Research
  • Scientists are currently researching many new
    treatments
  • A specially bred wheat species that is minimally
    immunogenic
  • Some other treatments that are being studies deal
with killing the bowel lining cells

10
Genetic Counseling
  • A genetic counselor can not usually predict that
a child will have celiac. If they find out that a
child does, however, they can explain the diet
and how to live by it.

Additional Interesting Facts
  • The Celiac Foundation has Team Gluten Walks. For
more information on these walks go to
    www.celiac.org
  • May is national Celiac Awareness Month
  • Some shampoos contain gluten in them, so a person
with celiac has to be careful when buying
    shampoo.
  • Passover is often very difficult for people with
celiac because matzo contains gluten and so does
most other kosher for Passover foods. They often
    buy oat matzo.
