Title: Scientific Notation

1
Scientific Notation
2
Scientific notation is a method used to write
very large or small numbers. To write a number in
scientific notation, write it as a product of a
number between 1 and 10 and a power of 10.
3
To write a number into scientific notation
  • Reading from left to right, place a decimal point
    after the first non-zero digit.
  • Place a caret () at the position of the original
    decimal point.
  • Count the number of places from the decimal point
to the caret. This is the exponent. If you count
to the right it is positive, left is negative.

  • 93,000,000
  • 321,500,000
  • 0.0000258
  • 0.00000014

6
To change a number in scientific notation to
decimal or standard form
  • Multiply the decimal part by the positive power
of 10 by moving the decimal point to the right
the same number of places as the exponent. Add
    zeros if necessary.
  • Multiply the decimal part by the negative power
of 10 by moving the decimal point to the left the
same number of places as the exponent. Add zeros
    if necessary.
