Need for Flexibility In Instruction

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
  • provides a blueprint for creating flexible goals,
    methods, materials, and assessments that
    accommodate learner differences
  • UDL mirrors the universal design movement in
    architecture and product development
  • UDL uses technology's power and flexibility to
    make education more inclusive and effective for
    all.
  • Flexible digital media makes it easier than ever
    to customize teaching and learning

CAST Definition of UDL
  • The central practical premise of UDL is that a
    curriculum should include alternatives to make it
    accessible and appropriate for individuals with
    different backgrounds, learning styles,
    abilities, and disabilities in widely varied
    learning contexts. The "universal" in universal
    design does not imply one optimal solution for
    everyone. Rather, it reflects an awareness of the
    unique nature of each learner and the need to
    accommodate differences, creating learning
    experiences that suit the learner and maximize

  • When teachers apply universal design for learning
    (UDL) principles to curriculum, they

  • offer students multiple forms of expressing
    learning, and
  • provide a variety of options for learning.

  • Speaking Feature Can be programmed to speak each
    letter, word or sentence as it is typed. These
    settings can be mixed and matched.
  • Reading Feature Can be programmed to read what
    has been written previously. It can read part or
    all of a document.
  • Reads original text and/or text scanned or
    cut-and-pasted from secondary sources textbooks,
    websites.
  • On-screen palettes as word banks or prompts.
  • Create worksheets using locked text and set up
    student portfolios.

  • The picture library allows user to add pictures
    that may be paired with words (the word can be
    removed).
  • Sentences can be created for emergent readers or
    to assist with difficult words.

    the overlay (the face) that matches your needs

  • Each overlay consists of two parts.
  • The printed overlay shows current location of
    each key in overlay.
