Title: Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation in Relation to Right and Left Brain Dominant People'

1
Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation in Relation to
Right and Left Brain Dominant People.
  • Jacob Allan
  • Keyla Jackson
  • Justin Kisluk
  • Jeff Macken
  • Matt Syska

2
Research Question
  • Is there a correlation between brain hemisphere
dominance, and whether a person is intrinsically
    or extrinsically motivated?

3
Statistical hypothesis
  • H0 P1 P2
  • The percentages are equal
  • HA P1 ? P2
  • The percentages are not equal

4
Terms
  • Intrinsic Motivation- a person motivated by ones
self, an internal drive and need to accomplish
    ones tasks.
  • Extrinsic motivation- a person motivated by
whether or not the situation will benefit them
personally. Example they are looking for an
external reward such as money or pleasure.
  • Right brained- a person who dominantly uses their
right hemisphere of their brain in everyday life.
They tend to be more creative and spontaneous.
  • Left brained- a person who dominantly uses their
left hemisphere of their brain in everyday life.
These people tend to follow facts and excel math
    and sciences.
  • Survey- collect information from a sample of
people that can be used to draw a conclusion
about those people on a certain subject.

5
Background
  • Though many studies have been done on right and
left brained people, and intrinsic and extrinsic
motivation, there are no studies or surveys that
come to our attention that have included both
concepts or have compared them to each other.

6
Significance
  • This survey helps use to understand what types of
teaching methods could be used on right and left
    brained people.
  • Also what types of rewards should be given in the
    work place.

7
Procedure
  • Creation of a comprehensive survey
  • Survey validation
  • Distribution of the survey
  • Analysis of results

8
Process
  • Distribute survey to selected homerooms
  • Collect surveys
  • Assess surveys
  • Compare percentages
  • Test the survey results

9
Variable Considerations
  • Survey to be distributed
  • Homeroom teachers to read the directions
  • Sample Population
  • Three homerooms from each grade

10
Ethics and Bias
  • Make sure none of the questions are pertinent to
    the age group
  • The group must have as little contact with people
    taking the survey as possible

11
Sample Survey Questions
  • Is it easier to remember peoples
  • Names
  • Faces
  • Your desk or where you work is
  • Neat and organized
  • Cluttered with stuff you might need
  • Is it easier for you to understand
  • Algebra
  • Geometry

12
Data
Left Brain / Extrinsic 22/73 30 Right Brain
/ Intrinsic 26/60 43
13
Test
  • Two sided z-test on proportions

14
Test
  • Two sided z-test on proportions
  • Z 1.558
  • a 0.05
  • P 0.1148
  • For 95 Confidence
  • Z 1.96
  • Z gt Z
  • a lt P
  • Failed to reject Null Hypothesis at given
    significance level

15
Conclusion
  • Our results show that with 95 confidence we can
say that there is a correlation between
left/right brain dominance and type of motivation.

16
Problems/Changes
  • Give the sample population more time to complete
    the surveys
  • Honesty of participants
  • Subjects returning unfinished surveys
  • Adjust survey to be easier to assess
