A. The Weimar Republic
  • After Kaiser William II abdicated and the
    monarchy was gone a democratic republic emerged.
  • This republic faced many problems
  • Many small political parties emerged and gaining
    a consensus on anything was difficult.
  • Was blamed for the disaster of the Versailles
    Treaty, especially the guilt clause and huge
    reparations.

B. INFLATION
  • When Germany fell behind on payments to France,
    they occupied the industrial RUHR VALLEY.
  • German workers went on strike.
  • Weimer govt tried to help by printing large sums
    of money which caused inflation to spiral out of
    control.
  • Also showed weakness of Weimer govt to prevent
    French occupation.

  • The U.S. Dawes Plan helped control the situation.
  • Loans were given to Germany
  • France agreed to leave the Ruhr.
  • Reparations were lowered.

  • Germans were suffering, angry, and wanted a
    strong leader.
  • Hitler was drawn to National Socialist German
    Workers (NAZI) and quickly rose to be their
    leader.
  • Nazi storm troopers took a military approach to
    pushing their ideology.
  • The Nazis quickly
  • gained support
  • among citizens.

thrown in jail and served less than a year.

    of the German nation.

  • Nazi-led mobs on Jewish communities.
  • Insurance payments were denied.
  • Jews began to be sent to concentration camps, or
    detention centers for citizens considered enemies
    of the state.
