Title: Long Beach Elder Abuse Prevention Team EAPT City of Long Beach

1
Long Beach Elder Abuse Prevention
Team(EAPT)City of Long Beach
  • Multidisciplinary Team
  • Theresa Marino, Manager, Bureau of Public Health
  • Christabel Trinidad, Program Coordinator
  • Nani Blyleven, Administrative Analyst
  • Nancy Lewis, PHN, Public Health Nurse

2
Successes and Accomplishments
  • The Long Beach Elder Abuse Prevention Team fills
the void in the greater Long Beach area (half
millions person), where no MDT existed prior to
2006, to address elder abuse and neglect.
  • The reassignment and restructuring of the Long
Beach Police Department handling elder abuse
cases. There is now a section that specifically
handles elder abuse, in addition to the
    forgery/fraud, domestic violence and adult
    investigation sections.

3
Successes and Accomplishments
  • As a result of the January 2007 meetings
educational training on fiduciary abuse, EAPT
members from various agencies worked together to
help a family recover the full down payment of
5000 and the cancellation of a 100,000 contract
entered into by their 87-year-old father who was
a victim of a financial scam.
  • The success of holding a meeting with a
    representative from Seniors Against Investment
Fraud (SAIF) with the Dept. of Corporations about
re-implementing the SAIF program in Long Beach
with the involvement of LBPD and has since been
    re-implemented with RSVP.

4
Get Smart
  • In addition to starting the EAPT, the smartest
thing the program did was schedule the monthly
meetings at lunchtime so persons had adequate
time to attend. This provided time for networking
and trust building among one another.

5
Lessons Learned
  • By hosting the November 2007 EAPT Community
Education Forum for Providers with attendance of
more than 105 persons. The EAPT learned that
providing awareness was vital to preventing elder
    abuse and neglect.

6
Challenges
  • Lack of cases brought for case conferencing
  • To build the MDT and building trust. Members
gained the knowledge of each other and their
services, and they were able to work together and
    resolve cases

7
Surprise!
  • The staff learned from the Archstone Foundation
that the EAPT functions as a community coalition,
    not an MDT!

8
Phase II Goals
  • Goal 1 To enhance, sustain and institutionalize
the Long Beach Elder Abuse Prevention Team
(LBEAPT) Community Coalition by December 31, 2010
  • Goal 2 Create a minimum of three working groups
    as subcommittees of the LBEAPT.
  • Goal 3 Continue the community awareness campaign
to increase prevention and reporting of elder
abuse and neglect in the greater Long Beach area.

9
The Big Picture
  • Continue as a coalition to provide education,
    training, and community awareness
  • Hold an educational forum yearly
  • The work group will hold monthly case
    conferencing
  • Address two major issues for work groups abuse
in unlicensed board and care homes and lack of
shelters for abuse and neglect victims

10
Value Added
  • Networking, sharing information and working on
common goals, to raise awareness about elder
    abuse.
  • Share the EAPTs experiences with the process of
starting an MDT in conjunction with a community
    coalition

11
Dream Big
  • What is your vision for the lasting legacy of the
    project in your community?
  • That the Long Beach Elder Abuse Prevention Team
will continue to exist within the greater LB area
and that elder abuse and neglect will decrease as
    a result of this project.
