Title: Tissues

1
Tissues
  • Distinguish the four tissue types.

- epithelial, connective, nervous and muscle
2
Case Neonatal Jaundice
3
Epithelial tissue objectives
  • Draw an epithelium, labeling cell junctions and
    the apical basal membranes.
  • Explain the role of different epithelial types
    and different junction types.

4
  • Epithelia - cover body surfaces and line body
    cavities (lumen), form glands

Functions of epithelial cells include
movement of materials in and out of the body.
protection of the internal environment against
the external. secretion of a product.
5
  • Characteristics of epithelial cells
  • They are contiguous (attached to one another).
  • The cells rest on the basement membrane, an
    extracellular matrix they produce.
  • They often have two different sides
  • - apical side towards the lumen
  • - basal side towards extracellular
    fluid
  • Note these cells are polarized, meaning the two
    cell surfaces have different functions.

6
Types of epithelial tissues
  • - exchange
  • - transporting
  • - protective
  • - ciliated
  • - secretory
  • exocrine
  • - mucus, saliva, earwax, milk, oil, digestive
    enzymes
  • endocrine
  • - hormones

7
Digestive tract - example organ with multiple
tissues
  • 1.2. Smooth muscle
  • 3. Transporting epithelium
  • 4. Secretory epithelium (goblet cell)
  • 5. Lumen

8
Connective tissue objectives
  • List the basic components of connective tissue
and their contribution to tissue function.
  • Name and describe the different connective tissue
    types.

9
Connective tissues support, connect, protect,
strengthen and insulate other tissues.
  • Composed of
  • specialized cells and their extracellular
    products
  • Connective tissue type depends on
  • type of cell specialization
  • type and arrangement of protein fibers
  • type of ground substance

10
elastin - gives flexibility
collagen - gives strength
Two fiber types in connective tissue
11
Loose connective tissue
12
Dense regular connective tissue
13
Cartilage
Adipose (fat)
Blood
Bone
14
For Monday
  • Review epithelial and connective tissue
  • Begin Chapter 5 - cell membrane components and
    movement across membranes
