DR. OSCAR ELIAS BISCET
  • MARTYR OF FREEDOM

PLATFORM BISCET www.plataformabiscet.org
2
Born in Havana, Cuba, on the20th July 1961. He is
specialized in internal medicine and is married
to Elsa Morejon, a nurse by profession. They have
two children, Winnie and Yan.
3
In the late 80s he manifested openly against the
Communist regime in Cuba.   In 1994 the Cuban
authorities accused him and indicted for
"dangerousness".
4
In 1997, in collaboration with other members of
the peaceful opposition movement, Dr. Biscet
established the Lawton Foundation for Human
Rights.
5
He elaborated a study about clandestine abortion
techniques used in the Daughters of Galice
Hospital in which he documented shocking
non-official statistics. This report also
includes testimonies from women who explain the
methods used to kill their newborn children,
which is a common practice in hospitals
throughout Cuba.
6
He denounced openly and courageously the abortion
problem in Cuba as an attack towards the right to
life. He addressed these words to his colleagues

"In your hands you have the power to stop this
genocide made legal, you can say no and help to
change this wrong behavior within our society
with your support ."
7
In February 1998, Dr. Biscet was expelled from
the National Health System and since then, he has
been banned from practicing his profession. His
wife was also fired due to the human rights
activities of her husband. The family was evicted
from her home, and since then they have been
depending on the relief and charity from their
friends in order to survive.
8
THE TAMARINDO FASTING
On the 7th June 1999, they began a hunger
strike of forty days, eating only liquids, to
demand the release of all the political prisoners
and for expressing their rejection to the
violation of human rights (death penalty and
abortions) in Cuba . Thousands of
Cubans joined the fasting in 54 different sites.
Their compatriots in exile around the world also
joined the fast in sign of solidarity. Members of
the international media covered the event and
foreign diplomats visited the small apartment at
Tamarindo 34, in Havana.
9
At the end of the fasting, he declared his option
for the Non-Violence and claimed to have acquired
the ability to love his enemies, replacing
violence, anger, revenge and hatred for justice
and forgiveness. He concluded "But the path of
the righteous is like the light of dawn, which
grows until the day is perfect.... And that
perfection in shape of freedom comes from God. "
10
He then suffered 26 arrests over a period of 18
months and he was subjected to degrading tortures
in order to demolish his moral...
THEY DID NOT SUCCEED
He is a devout Christian who has declared
follower of the philosophy of non-violence of
Gandhi and Martin Luther King. He has been
physically and psychologically abused, suffering
beatings, threats, humiliation, blackmail,
intimidation, interrogation and detention in
individual cells together with criminals and
mentally deranged. On several occasions, the
State Security has been subjected him to
psychiatric examinations in Mazorra (the
psychiatric hospital in Havana) and they have
pressed him to depart from Cuba, but he has
responded that he would never abandon his
country.
11
He was arrested and tried in March 2003 and
sentenced to 25 years!.
International Amnesty considers him a prisoner
of conscience, detained solely for being
peacefully exercising his fundamental freedoms
and they ask for his immediate and unconditional
release.
12

    conditions

    for months.

    relatives.

13
Isolation cell as described by Dr. Oscar Elias
Biscet in a secret letter taken from prison by

Cuba). The Head of the section of U.S. interests
in Havana, James Cason, askesd this replica to be
built.

    Cuban Medical Convention.

George W. Bush awarded him with the Presidential
Medal of Freedom, the highest award given to an

Dr. Biscet, the Lawton Foundation for Human
Rights will keep the medal until Cuba is free.

for Human Rights, Dr. Rainer Hildebrandt Medal in

Award for Concord in 2006 and 2009,but they have
not yet granted it to him.

16
Firm in his demands for justice until Cuba
achieves its freedom, Dr. Biscet was in good mood
and spirit despite of the abuse he was subjected
to. In a visit by his mother to prison, he
sent a message to his wife Elsa, asking that his
brothers and sisters on the island and the Cubans
in exile join in prayer with the international
community for the freedom of all the political
prisoners and freedom of expression in Cuba.
17
"The possibility to refuse the participation in
the consultation phase, preparation and execution
of these acts against life should be guaranteed
to doctors, health workers and those in charge of
hospitals, clinics and nursing homes. Those who
recourse to conscientious objection must be
protected not only from legal penalties but also
for any damage to the legal, disciplinary,
financial and professional levels. From
Juan Pablo II in his Evangelium Vitae (1995)
"I declare that direct abortion, which is, willed
as a purpose or as a mean, is always a grave
moral disorder, since it is the deliberate
killing of an innocent human being" John Paul II
Juan Pablo II
18
On the 6th December 2009, Dr. Oscar Elias Biset
will have been 10 years in prison. During the
visit of his wife in October 2007 he addressed
these words "I dont want you to be sad,
remember that I chose jail to prove the
injustices of the regime, also remember that
friends and foes suggested me to leave the
country, and I preferred to be in captivity to
find the justice and that nobody else in my home
have to suffer because of talking. I do not
complain of what happens or could happen to me, I
feel fulfilled and happy to meet this act of
agape love. I am the voice of those innocent
children despised by their parents and destroyed
by society. I refuse to hatred, revenge of the
individual and society with the death, because we
need live for living it with dignity "
