L.O 4 Understand the doubling rule
  • When there is only one consonant between two
vowels, the first vowel sound is long. (It sounds
like the name of the letter.)
  • final

13
So when we add a suffix to a short vowel word,
we need to add a second consonant to stop it
changing into a long sound.
  • Hopped (only one p changes the o sound)
  • Hopping
  • Robbing
  • Hugging

14
Write out each of the eight words below with a
suffix added.
  • Spelling clue they all have short vowel sounds
so you will need to do some doubling to keep them
    that way!

15
L.O 5 Remember that only one consonant between
vowels creates a long sound.
  • Highlight the words in the passage below that
are incorrectly spelt because the writer doesnt
    understand the doubling rule
  • Charlotte droped her bag in a puddle on the
way to school. She sobed because her homework was
ruined. Her friend huged her but Charlotte had
the feelling she would get into trouble. She
decidded to see her from tutor.

16
L.O 6 Remember to drop the e when you add ing to
a base word
  • Write these words in their ing form as they are
    read out
  • hate
  • taste
  • decide
  • care
  • hope
  • write
  • shine
  • bite
