The night of the stroke
  • I left a meeting at UQ and phoned Jeff
  • He couldnt speak, I am not able
  • I rang a friend who helped get him into hospital
  • Next day, Jeff had another stroke and surgery
  • I knew we had a big problem
  • Jeff couldnt read or write at all
  • His speech was fluent, but with little content
  • I thought he could understand everything I was
    wrong!
  • I started making phone calls
  • To deal with Jeffs and my jobs
  • To find a speech therapist

The first summer
  • I sat in on Jeffs therapy sessions, and learned
    what Helen did
  • I invited myself, repeated at home we worked
    every day
  • Jeff started shopping
  • His list was pictures and copied words
  • We could only buy what we already had

  • Rehabilitation is frustrating, intense, expensive
  • You have to counteract negative messages

    normal again

    myself
