  • Guidelines for Safe Lab Experiences

Eye Safety
  • Wear goggles when working with acids or bases,
    using an open flame, or performing an activity
    that could lead to eye injury.
  • First Aid- Flush chemicals from your eye with
    water. Notify the teacher at once when something
    splashes into your eye.

Avoid Accidents
  • Accidents can be avoided!
  • Plan ahead.
  • Read all instructions.
  • Listen for instructions.
  • Follow the instructions.
  • Be alert to hazards.
  • Be careful.

Safety Equipment
  • Know the location of the
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Sink
  • Eye wash
  • Fire Blanket
  • Fire escape route

Neatness
  • Clear the work table of books, papers, and
    notebooks.
  • Tie back long, loose hair.
  • Roll up long sleeves.
  • Remove dangling necklaces, earrings and other
    jewelry.
  • If necessary wear an apron.

Chemicals
  • Wear protective gloves when working with
    irritating or corrosive liquids.
  • Never taste a chemical.
  • Never eat or drink in the science room.
  • Add an acid or base to water.
  • Neutralize an acid spill with baking soda before
    wiping up the spill.
  • Waft fumes, but dont inhale deeply. Use a fume
    hood if necessary.

Electricity
  • Check for frayed cords and plugs before using the
    electrical outlet.
  • Keep cords out of the way.
  • Wrap microscope cords around the coarse focus
    knob and stage.
  • Keep electrical equipment away from water!
  • Never touch a electrical equipment with wet hands.

Glassware
  • Check glassware for chips and cracks.
  • Never use chipped or cracked glassware.
  • Use only heat resistant glassware on burners.
  • Alert the teacher if glassware breaks.
  • Never pick up broken glassware with your bare
    hands.

Sharp/Pointed Objects
  • Use sharp and pointed objects with care.
  • Alert the teacher in the event of a cut.
  • Wash the cut. Apply pressure if it is bleeding.
  • Students will receive first aid from the nurse.
  • All blood spills must be reported and treated
    with bleach.

Cleanup
  • Wash hands after using chemicals, soil, or other
    lab materials.
  • Clean up all lab areas before leaving the room.
  • Follow the teachers clean up instructions
    regarding stowing of equipment.
  • Make sure water and electricity has been shut off.
