What is the Dali Lama?
  • The Dalai Lama is a manifestation of the Buddha
    of Compassion

  • Whenever a Dalai Lama dies, a new reincarnation
of the Dalai Lama is born

3
Early Life
  • Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, was born on
July 6th 1935 in a small Tibetan village called

completed a Doctorate of Buddhist Philosophy when
    he was 25.
  • This shaped his way of thinking and put him in
    the direction to lead

5
Buddhist Philosophy
  • This is what shaped the Dalai Lama
  • Buddhism has strong roots in peace and is against
    all war
  • Buddhist believe in living simple lives, and that
desire is the key to suffering
  • Without desire, humans are able to reach beyond
    suffering, thus reaching enlightenment

6
Leadership Responsibilities
  • On November 7, 1950 China invaded Tibet and the
Dalai Lama was forced into action
  • These were the beginning of peace talks between
China and Tibet that havent ended yet

7
China Conflict
  • On March 10, 1959 the Tibetans rose in anger
towards the Chinese government and demanded their
    freedom
  • Their rebellion was crushed by the Chinese Army,
and the Dalai Lama was sent into exile in India

8
In Exile
  • The Dalai Lama is in exile along with 120,000
    other Tibetans
  • At the beginning of the exile, he realized the
need for preservation of the Tibetan culture
  • He set up schools in India for the refugees,
where they could learn about Tibetan history and
    culture

9
Other Establishments
  • Along with the Tibetan educational system, the
Dalai Lama has also re-established over 200
Tibetan monasteries in order to preserve the
    Tibetan Buddhists teachings

10
Democracy
  • Democracy is very important to the Dalai Lama
  • He has established Democratic Constitution based
on Buddhist philosophy and the Universal
    Declaration of Human Rights

11
Power Importance
  • The Dalai Lama says that once Tibet is liberated,
he wont have power over the government.
  • The power will be given to an elected parliament
    and prime minister.

spreading the word about his cause in Tibet. His

Five Point Peace Plan

future of Tibet in Washington D.C.
  • It called for restoring democracy and the
restoring of fundamental human rights in Tibet.

14
Contact with West and East
  • In the Dalai Lamas ventures around the world he
has spoke at interfaith service among Catholics
    and Jews.
  • He is quoted saying I always believe that it is
much better to have a variety of religions, a
variety of philosophies, rather than one single
religion or philosophy. This is necessary because
of the different mental dispositions of each
human being. Each religion has certain unique
ideas or techniques, and learning about them can
    only enrich one's own faith.

15
Nobel Peace Prize
  • In 1989 the Dali Lama was awarded the noble peace
    prize.
  • His negotiations with China had always been
peaceful for almost 30 years. He is still in
    these negotiations today.

16
Philosophy
  • His Holiness often says, "I am just a simple
Buddhist monk - no more, nor less."
  • What do you think this tells us about the Dalai
    Lamas Philosophy?

17
Daily Life
  • The Dalai Lama lives the simple life of a monk.
He has a small cottage in Dharamsala where he
    resides.
  • Material things do not appeal at all to the Dalai
Lama. Why do you think this is?

18
Reincarnation
  • The Dalai Lama states that if the Tibetans decide
to continue the institution of the Dalai Lama is
    not up to him.
  • What would be the effects of losing the over 600
year old intstitution of the Dalai Lama for the
Tibetan people? Could there be positive effects?

19
Tibetan Freedom Concerts
  • In the 90s a number of concerts were held to
raise money for Tibet and awareness about Tibetan
    independence, especially among the youth.

20
Quotes
  • When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
Remember that not getting what you want is
sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.Learn the
rules so you know how to break them properly.

21
Quotes
  • Judge your success by what you had to give up in
    order to get it.
  • "The greatest of man's spiritual needs is the
need to be delivered from the evil and falsity
that are in himself and in his society."
  • "True nonviolence is an impossibility without the
    possession of unadulterated fearlessness."
