Wall Assembly
Layout and assembly of a load-bearing wall.

Wall Assembly Order
  • Snap a line on the deck.
  • Arrange and tack plates to deck.
  • Lay out the partitions, openings, and OC studs.
  • Remove tack nails and separate plates.
  • Assemble the components around openings.
  • Fill in remaining studs.
  • Add doubled top plates.
  • Raise and temporarily brace the wall.

Snap a Line
Measure back from the edge of the deck the width
of the wall plate.
Snap a line.

Arrange Plates
Tack the top and bottom plates in place along the
deck edge.

Lay Out Plates
Lay out intersecting walls, openings, and OC
studs.

Separate Plates
Remove tack nails and separate the plates.

Assemble Opening Frames
Assemble headers to jack, king, and cripple studs.

Attach OC Studs
Fill in remaining studs attaching to both plates.

Add Double Top Plate
Add double top plate.
Note the setback for double top plate overlap.

Square and Brace
Align the frame to chalk line and deck end.
Check wall for square by measuring diagonals.

Toenail the plates to the deck to keep them from
shifting.

Attach sheathing if desired.
