At age 28, I led the research team that
discovered plutonium. We held back from
announcing the discovery publicly when our tests
revealed this element's special
characteristic--harnessed in a then-hypothetical
atomic bomb it would explode with inconceivable
force.
9 Enrico Fermi The Nobel Prize in Physics 1938
Built the first experimental nuclear reactor,
the Atomic Pile of the University of Chicago,
Lise Meitner (1878-1968) was an Austrian-Swedish
physicist who first identified nuclear fission.
Despite her great contribution to the sciences,
she was not offered Nobel Prize. In 1992,
several years after her death, physicists named
their 109th element meitnerium in honor of
Lise Meitner, finally giving her the official
recognition she deserved. http//en.wikipedia.or
