Title: Chemical Storage and Inventories

1
Chemical Storage and Inventories
  • MCPS Science Safety Training
  • February 12, 2003

2
Its the Law
  • Maryland Code requires schools to maintain
    records of instructional chemicals.
  • Montgomery County Fire Marshall may ask to see
your schools chemical inventory MSDSs during
    the biannual inspection.
  • Montgomery County Fire Marshall may require you
to demonstrate that you are using the safest
methods to store, use and dispose of laboratory
    chemicals.

3
Chemical Inventory Should Provide
  • Information about how a chemical should be stored
    in relationship to other chemicals.
  • Information about the hazardous character (if
    any) of the chemical.
  • Suggested disposal method.
  • Amount currently on hand.
  • A reorder minimum.
  • A means of identifying unused chemicals.

4
Safe Chemical Storage
  • Involves more than simply recording chemical
    data.
  • Requires careful planning.
  • Requires awareness of potential storage hazards.

5
Start with Facility Evaluation
  • Chemical storage area should be separate and
    securable with vapor barrier door.
  • Off limits to all students.
  • Shelving secured to walls floors.
  • Shelves with lips to prevent roll off.
  • No shelf storage above eye level.
  • Shelving above work area should be free of
    chemicals and loose materials.
  • Storage room should be labeled to identify
hazardous nature of products stored within.

6
Facility Evaluation continued
  • Should have 2 exits. Exits free of hazardous
    materials.
  • Should have emergency panic button inside storage
    room.
  • Smoke detectors should be installed.
  • Eye wash fire blanket within 25 feet.
  • Ventilation separate from classroom ventilation.
  • Ventilation at 4 changes/hour minimum.

7
Facility Evaluation continued
  • Spill control should be on hand.
  • Mercury
  • Neutralizing chemicals
  • Dry sand/vermiculite
  • Separate proper acid flammable cabinets with
    locks resistant to chemical corrosion.
  • Area free of ignition sources.
  • Use explosion-proof, not standard, refrigerator.
  • Post emergency phone numbers. Phone nearby.
  • Supply appropriate chemical first aid materials.

8
Use Flinn Chemical Storage Plan
  • INORGANICS
  • Metals, Hydrides
  • Acetates, Halides, Iodides, Sulfates, Sulfites,
    Thiosulfates, Phosphates, Halogens
  • Amides, Nitrates (except Ammonium Nitrate),
    Nitrites, Azides
  • Hydroxides, Oxides, Silicates, Carbonates, Carbon
  • Sulfides, Selenides, Phosphides, Carbides,
    Nitrides
  • Chlorates, Bromates, Iodates, Chlorites,
    Hypochlorites, Perchlorates, Perchloric Acid,

9
Use Flinn Chemical Storage Plan

  • Phenols, Cresols
  • Dyes, Stains, Indicators

10
Chemical Storeroom Management
  • Place one person in charge.
  • All teachers responsible for storeroom
    management.
  • Provide Flinn Storage Plan map of room.
  • Make plan easy to locate items.
  • Designate label shelves and areas by compatible
    families.

11
Inventorying Chemicals
  • 2 people arranger, recorder.
  • Start in one area.
  • Clean, label and keep neat as you go.
  • Inventory as a chemical is moved.
  • Remove excess chemicals.

12
Chemical Inventory Data
  • Chemical Name
  • CAS (Chemical Abstract Service)
  • Class
  • Compatible Family
  • Hazardous Code
  • Disposal Code
  • Shelf Location
  • R1S2R2
  • Room 1, shelf 2, row 2
  • Approximate amount on hand
  • Minimum amount for reorder
  • MSDS

13
Some Storage Policies
  • Only keep chemicals that are for instruction.
  • Do not store chemicals for more than 2 years.
  • Do not order excess.
  • Use original labels and containers.
  • Follow proper disposal procedures.
