Central Aim

• To improve abilities in protecting human life and
  environment as well as cultural heritage, and
  promote sustainable development of safe
  communities in the Baltic Sea region
• To create networks among national, regional and
  local authorities as well as non-state
  organisations, research institutions and
  enterprises

Objectives

• To support development of safe communities by
  improving abilities in protecting human life and
  the environment, both natural and physical, as
  well as cultural heritage and certain uniquely
  fragile ecosystems in the Baltic Sea region
• To extract lessons learned from accidents and
  efforts made to reduce natural and technological
  disasters or their combination, namely complex
  disasters
• To strengthen transnational, cross-sectoral and
  multi-level cooperation to increase safety of the
  population, protection of the environment and
  sustainable development in countries and
  societies adjacent to the Baltic Sea

Outputs

• Planning systems that take safety issues properly
  into account
• Defined the role of non-state actors
• Established transnational, cross-sectoral and
  multi-level cooperation
• Introduced the role of new IT technologies
• Developed transnational training system

Results

• Contributed to sustainable development of safe
  communities, and contributed to the mitigation of
  the risks and impacts of accidents with cross
  border effects
