Upgrading Our Business Systems and IT
Infrastructure
  • Computer monitoring system (NetSaint) by Fall
    2001 to monitor key systems proactively
    http//netsaint.sourceforge.net
  • Continue upgrades to building networks to support
    Internet2 service levels required for streaming
    video and faculty research
  • Gigabit to each building, 10/100 to the desktop
  • Provide dual routing paths from each building for
    redundancy and greater reliability
  • Active Directory infrastructure for Windows 2000
    migration with delivery to OIT labs for Fall 2001

Enhancing our Support Services and Web Site
  • Extend McAfee antivirus to campus during summer
    2001 utilizing new McAfee server
  • Develop new Remedy interface for OIT and the
    campus during summer 2001 to facilitate
    multi-departmental use.
  • Have had great success with Communication
    Services using Remedy to streamline ethernet jack
    survey process
  • Prepares UMBC for a distributed support model
    which will be needed as new initiatives like
    PeopleSoft come online

  • Creation of online community for Resnet students
    to foster communication between students that
    have a need with those that have the knowledge
    and experience
  • Reorganizing help desk
  • Add four (4) additional full-time graduate
    students for phone/walk-in support allowing for
    full-time staffing until 1000pm
  • Move Ops into ECS019 to merge with help desk
  • Add a technical lead position to be a liaison to
    SANs and point person on technical issues as they
    arise.
  • Focus staff on specific functional areas to
    increase proficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Creation of a web support position to focus on
    OIT web page content based on customer needs

Implementing the Assured Access to Computing
Initiative
  • Continued wireless deployment in library, ECS,
    and Commons will provide easy access to network
    for students, faculty and staff
  • Provide support of new wireless laptops for
    Faculty, Staff and Students
  • Upgrade Westhills apartments to ethernet
  • Assured Access Leasing Program
  • Leasing IBMs at 25/semester to students with the
    greatest financial need beginning in August 2001
  • Distribute up to 120 IBMs

Develop Research Infrastructure to Promote
Graduate Enrollment and Research
  • Upgrade existing services to meet continued
    demand for computation (e.g. disk space,
    processing machines etc.)
  • Expand computational environment to augment
    Titan with additional resources (e.g. Gridware by
    Sun which allows utilization of unused
    processors)
  • Computer Replacement Initiative (July 2001)
  • Replacing 350-400 departmental staff and lab
    machines which are below PIII 333MHz
  • Machines will be setup with Windows 2000 and
    McAfee to aid in the Novell to Windows 2000 and
    Norton to McAfee migrations
