5LEARNING PREFERENCES
6Pedagogies assessment
7Two-way learning video stream
8Learning preferences 1
- What about the video streams? Did you watch any
of the video streams? -
- That was easy in that everything was presented
well. It was there. And you could also always
go back rather than if you are taking your own
notes you are sort of having to go back and
remember it was there. -
9Learning preferences 2
- Do you think that you remembered easier because
you could hear someone rather than reading? Or
it didnt matter? - Hear someone as well as them dot points on the
side. Summarise for you. If you wanted to know
in depth information for that particularyou
could always listen more carefully, or listen a
second time.
10Learning preferences 3
- So what do you like about it?
- Well, when you get into Janison, you can
actually see the teachers face. What theyre
talking about and wear the ear phones to block
out everything else around you and if you miss
anything and you need to make notes you can go
back anytime you want without ruining the whole
system.
11Learning preferences 4
- Youve got plenty of reading stuff given to you
there as well, and a hand if you wanted a hand,
if you wanted to take any notes, or you could
just print it off, when you need. It makes it a
lot easier thansitting there with notes all of
the timeand when you read, read, read it doesnt
sink in, whereas if youre listening as well as
reading it makes it sink in a lot better.
12AIED504A discussion forum
- Forum posting what does self determination mean
to you? -
- Self Determination - - Thu, 14 Jul 2005, 1222
- Self Determination is a very powerful word
and to me it identifies who I am and where I come
from. Self Determination encourages people to
stand for what they believe in and be proud of
who they are as an indigenous person. I believe
as Indigenous pre-service teachers it's our duty
to teach children to be confident and to show
pride in what they do. We as a nation should be
able walk together as one. We need to build up
our bridges if we want to make a difference.
13Student comments interaction
- It made you more aware of what they were capable
of too. Not only what youre, you know, how you
go yourself, and sometimes like I think the
people with slower understanding of a question,
it gives them a basic ideas of where to go and
how to answer that question without going too far
off and giving not enough information. Yeah, it
was really good for that, looking at other
peoples answers.
14Student comment about clear guidelines
- I liked the discussion. At least we got some
ideas and feedback from the other students and it
sort of supported us too it was just like
being in the classroom but not seeing any faces
I knew where the other students were at with
their work.
15Some face-to-face
16ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

facilitator - feedback and positive reinforcement from the
facilitator - ongoing skill development (e.g. using keyboard
during chats).

33How to use Janison CD and guide
34Coffee shop a place to have a go
35Asking for help instant message
- Oct 5, 2005 at 1253 pm
- I have problems getting information about
AIED500A on the site. error in playing the video
conference !!! and i dont have book ? -
- Hi X, you really need the book for this unit. I
will send you one. Try watching the video stream
from another computer and let me know what
happens. If you still receive the error message
I will look into it further. Otherwise, it could
be the computer you are using. - CheersClaire
36INTERACTION
37Online interaction
- Group announcements to motivate and communicate
events - social forum coffee shop
- group paced, teacher directed activities such as
online chats or discussion forum (with whisper
function for private interaction!) - peer feedback and sharing in discussion forum
- instant messenger.
38A place to facilitate announcements
39Developing a community coffee shop
40Community 1
- What about social aspect, like what did you
think about being part of a group? -
- Good, and logging onto Jansion you could see all
those little yellow people and put your little
arrow there and see who was there. It was good.
41Community 2
- And the video streams? You liked a few of
them? - Yeah, I lived on Jansion.
- Was that your lifeline to the rest of the
students? - Yes.
42A place to support 1
- Did it ever help motivate you being part of a
group and seeing other people putting their work
there and - A lot, because in the beginning I was just lost
and once I got to know everyone I kept in regular
contact by email and um, the chats and you have
your own little yarning room and see whos in
there and then youd see who you can get advice
from and then send a little message.
43A place to learn 1
- If I just had the books Id be lost Id be on
the phone to everybody but with the computer I
can get on and I look for help with the other
students or to you. - So its like learning from other students too?
-
44A place to learn 1 (cont.)
- Yeah, yeah even though we sit around like this
and weve all got different ideas you value what
they told you so then you try and think - you go
home and think about it and then email them or
something, chat with them.
45A place to learn 2
- We talk more over the, that time ha, over the
computer and we make up for it when we come to
Cairns - and just encourages each other to keep going,
and if you need help you know, theyre there.
46A place to learn 3
- The only response you get is from one single
person whos marking it, whereas this way you had
a diverse group and points of view accordingly.
47A place to learn 4
- Now tell me about Janison
- Umm, Its good, its a lifesaver.
- Yeah and why is that?
- Because some things I could not find in the book
I would look on Janison and some things I wasnt
sure about, like the schools, compared to ours
well I looked on Janison and Kara gave good
information about where to look and Suzanne,
well it helps like that.
48A place to learn 4 (cont.)
- What about the coffee shop? Did you like going
into the coffee shop? - Oh, that was good. Because I could talk to
anybody then (laughs).
