1
Welcome to Mr. Johnsons Class
  • Take a book from the bottom cabinet and write
your name and my initials (SJ) in it
  • Take one of each handout on the side
  • Begin reading the course policies that are found
    in your textbook

2
DO NOW (Day 2)
  • Sit in your assigned seat
  • Show me your materials (graphing calc, notebook,
    pencils, covered textbook)
  • Show me your signed course policies

3
Objectives (Day 1)
  • Assign seats
  • Distribute textbooks
  • Distribute course policies
  • Start reviewing course policies

4
Objectives (Day 2)
  • Assign seats
  • Check materials (show me signed course policies)
  • Review rest of course policies
  • Getting to know you activity (if time)

5
Why so many rules???
  • Because I want to make the most out of our
    limited time together
  • The more efficient we are, the more time we will
    have for fun

6
Required Materials
  • A 3-ring binder (w/ paper)
  • Calculator
  • Pencils
  • Textbook
  • I will check periodically. Part of your
    participation grade.

7
Barrons book
  • Hold off on this, as we usually order them in
bulk from Womraths. I will let you know when it
    is time.

8
Absences
  • My advice to you be in class as often as you
possibly can. It makes your life easier.
  • Take responsibility to find out what you missed
from a classmate and/or the website.
  • If you sign in late, sign out early, are out for
a partial-day assembly / field trip, you still
must take the test / quiz THE SAME DAY.
  • If you are out the entire day, you will take the
test / quiz IN CLASS THE NEXT DAY.

9
Tardies
  • You are considered late once class is scheduled
to start as per Tiger Q
  • Tardies reduce your participation grade and
result in detentions after every 3
  • Sign the log

10
Bathroom Breaks
  • Just go, but sign the log.
  • There is so much information conveyed in this
class that you really cannot afford to be out too
    much!

11
Homework (PRACTICE)
  • May or may not collect, but I typically check it
    in some way everyday
  • I have high standards

12
Homework (PRACTICE)
  • The website (which I spend a lot of time
maintaining) will keep you abreast of
    assignments, assessments, and announcements.
    Bookmark it!

13
Tests/Quizzes
  • Tests usually every 3-4 weeks
  • Quizzes usually every week
  • Unannounced assessments may be given to check
your understanding. These need to be given less
frequently if you are showing your understanding
    in class.

14
Tests/Quizzes
  • There will be many opportunities to be exposed to
    AP format questions.
  • Use the College Board resources on the web as
    well as the Barrons book.

15
Tests/Quizzes
  • Get used to not being able to finish. Aim
    towards maximizing points.
  • I strongly encourage study groups with people who
    are committed to succeed.

16
Class Participation
  • Be attentive
  • Participate in group activities
  • Bring your materials
  • Follow the behavior standards

17
Behavior Standards
  • Tiger Q reigns
  • Work on start-up activity when you arrive
  • Raise your hand

18
Behavior Standards
  • Be aware of the minds desire to show its
intelligence level by shouting out answers.
Refrain from acting on this desire.

19
Behavior Standards
  • This classroom is a sanctuary.
  • Welcoming and non-judgment are the keywords.
  • Cultivate unconditional love and acceptance
towards those you dislike (this doesnt
    passivity)
  • Practice non-violent communication (I feel
    statements).

20
Behavior Standards
  • I work very hard and I care very much about you
and what I do for a living. I will respect you
and I hope you will offer me the same respect.
  • Please dont ask me when you will be getting
tests or quizzes back. I have 109 students and I
put a lot of care and attention into grading. It
takes time to process all of those papers.

21
Behavior Standards
  • Sharpen pencils at beginning of class. Get
    yourself a pencil case.
  • Sit in assigned seat everyday. They will change.
  • Raise the sophistication of your speech in this
classroom. Become aware of how others may
    interpret what you say.

22
Behavior Standards
  • No food or drink
  • No iPods or PDAs
  • No bags on your lap or your desk
  • Do not touch my stuff (computer, desk,
    black/whiteboard).

23
Consequences
  • Warning
  • Participation grade
  • Detention
  • Referral and/or call home
  • Id much rather reward you!

24
Grading
  • Tests 50
  • Quizzes 25
  • HW 15 (easy)
  • Class Participation 10 (easy)

25
College Board Standards
Notice how communication is half of the grade!
This is not your ordinary math class!
26
Extra Credit
  • Classroom jobs (email me)
  • Reports/projects
  • Math puzzles
  • Numb3rs (see website)

27
Extra Help
  • After school
  • Free periods (1,3,5,6)
  • I will either be in room 111A or room 112
  • I love helping people
  • Im part of the 51.5 million, so use me!

28
Concluding Remarks
  • My goal is to make the learning experience
    enjoyable and efficient.
  • If you work with me, we can have an amazing
    relationship.
  • If you bring an attitude of play to math, it can
    be fun.

29
Concluding Remarks
  • You should expect not to understand something the
first time you see it. You should only
understand something when you understand it.
  • Math does not come easy for me. It takes
repetition for me to understand something.

30
Concluding Remarks
  • If you trust in the process and devote time and
energy to it, then there is a better chance that
    understanding and/or success will come.
  • The process includes coming to class, paying
attention, doing HW, asking questions, etc.

31
Concluding Remarks
  • Enjoy the process and all the successes and
    failures that come with it.
  • With that said, you will need to make a decision
regarding whether you can handle this class. It
will be very different than what you are used to.
There is a lot of reading, writing, information,
    work, and confusing material.

32
Concluding Remarks
  • Let me know whats going on if you are
experiencing difficulty either with the course
    material or in your life.
  • I have experienced a great deal of difficulty in
my life (anxiety depression), and I am someone
    you can turn to.
  • There is no shame in experiencing difficulty. It
is what brings us together as humans.

33
Homework
  • Cover book get materials (due tomorrow)
  • Complete questionnaire which is found on my
    website (due Monday)
  • You will have a quiz on Thursday on the Course
    Policies!

  • Bring in an article involving statistics for
    Thursday
