Title: A New Railway Station For Middlewich

1
A New Railway Station For Middlewich
  • Middlewich Railway Steering Group

2
The original Middlewich railway station closed to
passengers in January 1960. Just remnants of the
old platforms remain.
3
The Middlewich line is a single track railway
running from Sandbach to Northwich. At the site
of the former station there is a second track
which forms a passing loop.

  • There is insufficient space for the new station
at the site of the original station. We propose a
new location to the south, the other side of the
Holmes Chapel Road bridge. This offers better car
    parking and pedestrian access.

Site of proposed new platforms, looking south.
7
Site of proposed car park, looking north.
Site of pedestrian subway at southern end of
proposed new platforms.
8
An idea of how the new Middlewich Station could
look, with reference to Glasshoughton Station in
West Yorkshire. This station opened on 21st
February 2005.
9
Well-lit platforms fully covered by CCTV cameras.
Cycle stands, timetable information, public
address system.
10
Passenger Help Point and seating on both
platforms.
Car park with space for 100 cars, also lit and
covered by CCTV.
11
Access ramps to both platforms.
Waiting shelters on both platforms.
12
How much will it cost?
To build Glasshoughton Station cost 2.5
million. Middlewich Station will cost more
because changes to the track layout and the
signalling are required. Say 3 million for a
2-platform station serving trains up to 4
coaches in length.
Where will the money come from?
Railway station development is normally funded by
the Department for Transport, Network Rail and
Local Authorities. They require proof that
passenger numbers will be high enough to justify
their investment. There are other possible
funding sources, including those associated with
tourism and commercial development.
