Title: Innovative real time multimodal passenger information system for the Attika Region

1
Innovative real time multi-modal passenger
information system for the Attika Region
Presenter Vassilis Mizaras, Managing Director
Infotrip S.A. Co-Authors T. Pachinis
(Infotrip), C. Antoniou (TREDIT), A.
Sotiriadis, D. Souflis (Agiltech)
2
The problem
  • Attika Region is a large and dense area of more
    than 4 million inhabitants
  • Includes complex and large urban area (Athens),
peri-urban and interurban areas Mainland and
    Islands
  • Urban roads, peri-urban highways, interurban
    highways Full multi-modality urban buses,
    metro, tram, suburban railway, interurban
    railway, interurban buses, ferry boats
  • Tourism gateway (Athens Airport Pireus port)
  • Lack of coordinated data collection and/or
    passenger information system
  • Limited and scattered historical and real time
    data

3
Geographical complexity
4
State of the art
  • Traffic management system of Athens established
    for Olympic Games
  • VMS traffic information to drivers
  • Autonomous journey planners by PT operators
  • Real time traffic information by private
    companies

5
Project scope objectives
  • Event management (Civil protection)
  • Region's Fleet monitoring
  • On-site meteorological sensors, traffic counters
    VMS
  • Multi-modal transport portal
  • Multi-modal journey planning (combined public
    transport modes, car and pedestrian)
  • Traffic conditions
  • Traffic incidents
  • Web map presentation POI search

6
System components
  • Event management
  • Monitor anomalies and catastrophies
  • Event response
  • Traffic engine (traffic modelling tool)
  • Real time travel times
  • Multi-modal journey planner
  • Car, pedestrian based on travel times
  • Public transport
  • Combination
  • Portal

7
System architecture
8
Traffic engine (MISTIC)
  • Main aim to produce real time travel times
based on continuous feed of traffic data
  • Maintain reference traffic network and O-D Matrix
  • Dynamic Traffic assignment
  • Initial feed by EMME/2 model of 1996,
incrementally revised to 2004 (major revision)
    and 2007
  • Use of historical data and measurements for the
    calibration of model (on-going process)
  • Interaction with route engine and event
    management
  • Can become a City Supervisor

9
Multi-modal routing
  • Car routing
  • Shortest, fastest, cheapest
  • Real time travel times update existing static
    values for the route calculation
  • Pedestrian routing
  • Public transport planning
  • Goal algorithm
  • Timetables and time windows
  • Penalty for changing vehicles or modes
  • Multi-modal combination
  • Proximity to PT station and least walking time
  • Park Ride

10
Portal
  • Map data
  • POIs
  • Traffic information for Athens
  • Public Transport timetables
  • Multi-modal routes
  • www.athensattica.com

11
Portal
12
Data collection
  • Public transport data various levels of
    digitized data
  • Greater Athens Urban area
  • Real time traffic data
  • Historical and model data
  • Peri-urban area
  • Toll-motorway Attiki odos
  • Mainly model outputs to be used
  • Lack of real time data
  • Interurban area
  • Lack of data
  • Free flow routing

13
Data maintenance
  • Reference network Cartographical map data
  • Update of traffic model
  • Public Transport timetables
  • Fast incident notification
  • Real time traffic feed Cater for new traffic
    management systems DATEX interfaces
  • Keep track of public transport service anomalies

14
Administration framework
  • 9 Public Transport operators and authorities
  • 3 road authorities and operators for main
    arteries
  • Over 20 local authorities for secondary roads
  • 3 Ministries directly or indirectly involved
  • Mostly Public Domain, but also private highway
    operators (concessions) and public transport
    fleets
  • First time large scale content aggregation

15
Conclusions
  • Content is the King!.
  • Poor content jeopardises project's outcome. A lot
of effort put on data validation and enhancement
  • Biggest delay in project execution in data
collection (in fact agreement for data sharing)
  • Even static data is not static enough!
  • Overall administration framework is required
  • Extended pilot and training period (6 months)
  • Beta version available from July 2008 final
    version December 2008
