History of Badminton
  • Originated in India
  • First given the name poona in the 1860s
  • Given the name badminton in 1873
  • The American Badminton Association (ABA) was
    formed in 1935
  • Became and Olympic sport in 1992

Court Dimensions
  • The court dimensions are as follows

Rules and Regulationsfor both singles and doubles
  • The server must serve from the right side of the
    court when the score is even
  • The serve must serve from the left side of the
    court when the score is odd
  • The server must strike the shuttle below his
    waist during the serve
  • The server must serve the shuttle into the box on
    the other side of the court to begin the point
  • The shuttle must not hit the ground during a
    volley or the play is stopped
  • Players should switch sides after the first game
    and before the 3rd game if wanted

Rules for Doubles
  • The shuttle must be struck by the receiver after
    a serve and then is it open to be struck by any
    player on the court
  • No player may serve or receive for 2 consecutive
    games

Scoring
  • Only the serving team may score points during the
    match. If the receiving team wins the volley,
    they then serve but do not receive any points
    from the last volley
  • Matches traditionally go up to 21 for a single
    game
  • If it is a 3 game set matches will traditionally
    be played up to 15

Shots used in Badminton
  • Serve
  • Smash (over head)
  • Drop
  • Backhand

Serve
  • The serve is the shot used to start each rally
  • You drop the shuttle with the hand your not
    holding the racket with and strike the shuttle
    below your waist
  • Should set up your opponent to hit the shots you
    want to hit later on in the rally

Smash Shot
  • In badminton there are many shots, one used very
    commonly is the Smash Shot
  • The smash shot is an overhead shot that is to be
    hit in a downward angle and aimed towards the
    ground on your opponents side of the court

Drop shot
  • The drop shot is a shot that barely goes over the
    net and falls on the opponents side
  • It is used when the opponent is playing deep in
    the court
  • Also used to set up a deep shot and to get your
    opponent running all over the court

Backhand
  • Backhand refers to the opposite side of your
    dominate hand.
  • The backhand shot is a shot used when the shuttle
    is to your backhand and you can hit it from the
    forehand side
