Title: J-50 Lab 1

1
J-50 Lab 1
  • Our agenda
  • The Online Library Catalog
  • Electronic Indexes and Databases
  • Web Searching
  • How Search Engines Work

2
After This, You Should be Comfortable
  • Using online catalogs, indexes and databases.
  • Using search engines and keywords to find
    information on the Web.

3
Online Catalogs
  • The UNC-CH libraries have a fantastic collection
of print and non-print resources that can help
    you research any topic.
  • The online catalogs provide a way to search for
the physical books, videos and other materials
that the library owns or can find for you. See
    http//www.lib.unc.edu/index.html

4
E-indexes and Databases
  • In addition to their collections physically
housed at the library, the libraries also have
extensive online versions of journal articles and
    other materials.
  • The e-journal finder is a way to find electronic
versions of articles from newspapers, magazines,
journals and other publications when you know the
    publication youre seeking. (http//eresources.lib
    .unc.edu/ejournal/)
  • The article databases allow you to search large
databases by either choosing a database to search
or finding appropriate databases by subject.
    (http//eresources.lib.unc.edu/eid/)

5
Keywords and Boolean Search
  • Directed searching requires you to determine what
part of a material you will search (e.g., author,
title) and how keywords will be used to include
and eliminate various materials to produce
results most relevant to your aims.
  • Boolean logic, which uses terms such as and,
or, and not in conjunction with keywords to
describe the relationships between how they
should appear in the documents you seek, is a
primary way to guarantee efficient and complete
results. Without this type of guidance, your
results may be incomplete and/or irrelevant.

6
Searching Tutorials and Resources

    http//unclib.lib.unc.edu5555/search_tips.html

Types of Search Engines
  • There are many types of search engines, but they
can be broken down into four primary categories
  • Search Engines
  • Meta-search engines
  • Subject Directories
  • Specialized Search Engines
  • The chart at http//www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingL
    ib/Guides/Internet/ThingsToKnow.htmlTypesOfTools
describes these types in detail and provides
    examples of each.

8
How Search Engines Work
  • See the How Stuff Works sites explanation of how
    search engines function http//computer.howstuffw
    orks.com/search-engine1.htm

9
