to reduced environmental impact
6
Salone Internazionale del Gusto and Terra Madre,
in accordance with the philosophy of Good, Clean
and Fair, are working to transform their
exhibition structure and content to be more
consistent one another.
7
We began during the 2006 edition, and 2008 marks
the first step towards a reduced environmental
impact Salone Internazionale del Gusto and Terra
Madre
The aim of the project, part of the Torino 2008
World Design Capital program, is the progressive
reduction of the environmental impact of the two
events, through the creation of an
interdisciplinary knowledge network which takes
into consideration different and complex design
scenario.

project scenario waste disposal
i.e. in 2006 edition
one of the main problem is the management of
solid waste
produced during all of the phases of the fair
lifecycle
(design, setting up the stands, fair
activities and dismantling the stands),
generated waste were about 190,000
kilograms and only the 17 was collected and
therefore properly recycled.
12
2008
project
scenario waste disposal
An event planned around the need to dispose of
its waste.
A recycling system has been designed in order to
in collaboration with
separate the 50 of the events waste. We
obtained the 58,3.

scenario waste disposal
it becomes necessary

- use
eco-materials for the stands and reuse them in
other field at the end of the fair

- use
biodegradable materials for on-site consumption
of food- eliminate furnishings having a short
lifecycle (e.g.carpeting)
- choosing materials and
components that are recyclable and reusable
(e.g. packaging for products)

- increase
proper differentiated collection of waste inside
the fair and confer the remaining outputs to
appropriate plants that will add value to them

From nature, to nature.
in collaboration with
The Salone Internazionale del Gusto and Terra
Madre have selected dining ware and shopping bags
from materials that are completely biodegradable
and compostable. This is the only viable option
for an event of this size (approximately 150,000
visitors) in order to reduce the environmental
impact of the disposable items.

scenario energy resources
Supplying energy derived from local renewable
sources
in collaboration with
After reducing the overall energy needs and
considered a more efficient energy use, Salone
Internazionale del Gusto and Terra Madre promote
energy that comes from the local territory and is
generated through the waste of different local
industries.

The actions we have taken (booth and internal
construction, waste separation, packaging, water,
biodegradable materials, energy, and
transportation) have helped to reduce the
emissions that would have otherwise been emitted
by the events and their organization.

Reduction policies do all they can to decrease
emissions, but they are not capable of totally
offsetting them. For these reasons, Salone
Internazionale del Gusto and Terra Madre decided
to offset their remaining CO2 emissions through a
biodiversity project along the Po River that
involves the reforestation of the River Po Park
in Turin.

The Salone Internazionale del Gusto and Terra
Madre are laboratories where experimental
projects find outlets that represent developing
trends and life styles. New dialogue creates
relationships between producers, promoters, and
distributors, which restore dignity to the
environment, educate, inform, increase awareness,
responsibility, and the sharing of the same
principles.

evolving plan that underlines the importance of
innovation and the educational role that they
have held since their first edition.
