Procedures regarding Room Areas
  • Student Desks/ Learning centers- The arrangement
of student desks will be in groups. Each group
will have a color assigned and each color will be
assigned a different center each day.
  • Storage areas and Teachers desk both areas are
off limits to the children. Any materials needed
from either place will be provided by the
    teacher.
  • Any shared materials can be found on the shelves
in the math calendar area. These materials are
    open and accessible to all.
  • Pencil sharpener at the beginning of each day
each student needs to make sure they sharpen 3
pencils. This is the only time designated for
sharpening pencils each day due to the amount of
    noise a pencil sharpener makes.

Procedures regarding other School areas
  • Bathroom
  • Raise your hand with the sign language sign for
the letter T to represent toilet instead of
asking, May I go to the bathroom?
  • Hang a girl and a boy bathroom pass by the door
on the wall so the students can grab one, make
eye contact and motion if they can go, if not
tell them to wait until they can.
  • Water Fountain
  • If there is one in the classroom there can be
free use unless there is a test or a presentation
    in progress.
  • Have the students show the sign language sign
for the letter W to represent water instead of
having to ask, May I go to the water fountain?
  • Hang a water fountain pass by the door to be
    used.

  • Library
  • Have a pass labeled by the door for the
    library.
  • Let the library be an incentive for students
    who finish work early.
  • Lining up
  • Have students line up by groups using their
table names (days of the week), this cuts down
the chaos of all the students trying to line up
    at the same time.

Procedures for Whole-Class Activities/Seatwork
  • Student Participation
  • Students are required to participate in
learning by doing the assignments and activities
to the best of their ability.
  • Students can answer questions by raising their
hands and stating their answer when the teacher
    calls on them.
  • There will be a jar containing popsicle sticks
with each students name on them. This jar is for
the teacher to pull random sticks out and call on
that student for an answer. Once that student
has been called on that day, the teacher
transfers their stick to another jar. When the
teacher goes through all the sticks, he/she will
    start all over again.

  • Signals for Students Attention
  • To get the students attention, the teacher
will count backwards from five. As he/she does
this, their hand will be in the air using their
fingers to count down as well as their voice.
Once the teacher gets to zero, the students know
they should be quietly looking at the teacher.
  • Making Assignments
  • The teacher will verbally tell the students
what assignment they need to be doing. The
teacher will also write assignments on a
    designated section on the blackboard.

8
Contd
  • Talk among students
  • During instruction, the students should not be
talking, but instead quietly listening to the
    speaker.
  • Once the assignment has been given, and the
teacher has turned music on, the students may
whisper to each other. If there is not any music
on, the students must be silent.
  • While walking through the halls, the students
should be doing Hips and Lips meaning one hand
is on their hip and the other hand has one finger
placed over their mouth. This finger reminds
them that there is no talking in the halls.

  • Passing out Books and Supplies
  • Each table will have a particular person chosen
(different each week), who will get the books and
supplies for each person at their table. The
teacher will give the students a couple of
minutes to get their supplies ready before
    beginning another task/assignment.
  • Turning in Work
  • The helper of the week at each table will
collect the student work and turn it in to the
    teacher.

10
Contd
  • Handing back assignments
  • 1) All work will be filed by student number,
which is determined by alphabetical order.
  • 2) For non-graded work, student helper will
place all returned work into cubbies that are
each labeled with student number for ease of
    distribution.
  • 3) For graded work, or other work that may be
considered a private matter, teacher will
    distribute.
  • Out of Seat Policies
  • Each student will be expected to be in their
seat during instruction time and if we are in the
    room unless otherwise specified.

  • Make-up Work
  • 1) Meet briefly with student to show what
assignments are necessary for make-up. Refer the
student to the posted weekly assignments at the
front of the room. Let the student know when the
    assignments are due.
  • 2) Set up 15 minutes before class to help with
    missed instruction.
  • 3) Show student make up basket to turn make-up
    work in.
  • 4) If group work is missed, help group members
    catch the absent student up.
  • 5) For prepared absences, send home work to be
    completed in advance.

Contd
  • Activities after work is finished
  • After work has been completed the student may
pick out a book from the book shelf or use a
library book if they have one, to read
independently. Other work that has not been
completed may also be completed at this time.

Procedures for Small-group Activities
  • Student movement into and out of groups
  • -Make sure students are seated prior to
beginning work to avoid unnecessary movement.
  • -For group transitions during a lesson, announce
the beginning of the transition, state your
expectations and tell students they have one
    minute to perform the transition.
  • -Give students instructions on what they are to
do as soon as they get to their new group.
  • Bringing materials to a group
  • - Pre-assign a materials manager to obtain any
materials necessary during a group project to
prevent the whole group from getting out of their
    seats.

14
Contd
  • Expected behavior of students in group/out of
    group
  • 1) Students may quietly talk with members of
their group, but quiet voices are a must.
  • 2) Use (SIGNAL 1b-whatever you put for that) to
gain the students attention when necessary.
  • 3) Students are to respect and listen to their
    fellow classmates.

15
Other Procedures
  • Beginning of Day
  • After students have entered the classroom, they
may quietly hang up their jackets and book bags,
and have a seat at their desks. Each morning a
question will be placed on the board and the
students will take out their journals and begin
to write on this topic. Students will continue
to write on this topic until the teacher asks the
students to finish. Each day the class will go
over the daily weather, the calendar, lunch menu,
and special events such as birthdays or other up
coming activities. The teacher will also take
this opportunity to collect money, permission
slips, and check students home folders (also a
    way of checking attendance).

16
Contd
  • End of Day
  • Before the end of the day announcements come
over the loud speaker, the teacher will ask the
students to take out their home folders. The
teacher will then go over the materials that
should have been placed in this folder throughout
the day, to ensure the students are taking home
the right materials. The teacher will also
review any special announcements with the
students and remind them of any special papers
parents may need to read and sign. The teacher
may also take this time to briefly discuss any
events that will be taking place the next day, to
get the students motivated and thinking about it.
The students will then be dismissed according to
whether they are riding the bus home, being
    picked up, or attending ASP.

17
Contd
  • Student conduct during delays, interruptions
  • It is vitally important that all students remain
silent during delays or interruptions so that
they can hear any important information or what
directions they are to follow next. They should
quietly stop whatever activities they are engaged
in, and listen. If a delay were to occur while
the students and teacher were waiting for a
special event or any out of the ordinary
situation, the group will remain together and
    follow the teachers lead.

18
Contd
  • Fire drill
  • During a fire drill students must immediately
stop whatever they are doing and line up at the
door. The line leader will already be
pre-established as well as the student who will
remain at the end of the line. Students will
wait at the door while the teacher has accounted
for all students. The students will quickly, yet
safely walk to the nearest exit that has been
predetermined by the school. Students must
remain in line, and remain silent. The students
will walk out of the school to their classs pre
assigned area and turn around to face the teacher
and the school, while remaining in line.
Students will silently wait for the next
direction. If it were a real fire the teacher
would give the next direction to the students, in
the case of a fire drill the class will begin to
reenter the building only after the all clear
    bell has rung.

19
Contd
  • Housekeeping/Student helpers
  • Our classroom will operate on a two week
rotation where the students will apply for the
classroom jobs as if they were real jobs. Each
job will have certain task to be done. Bad
behavior or poor job duty can result in being
    fired.
  • Substitute folder/procedures
  • In the event that a substitute is needed a
folder will be provided that includes the
following a fire escape route plan, a tornado
drill explanation, a class list and lesson
    plans/schedule of the day.
