Harmonization of Inland ENCs

• Inland ENC Harmonization Group (IEHG) founded in
  2003
• USA, Canada, Europe, Russia
• Development of a common standard
• Common Encoding Guide as first step
• Goal recognition as special profile within the
  next edition of IHO S-57

Latest developments

• Directive on River Information Services (RIS) of
  the European Union
• Binding standard for Inland ENCs
• Obligation for member states to provide Inland
  ENC coverage for major waterways (class V and
  above)

Status of harmonization

• ENCs (Inland ENCs and pure S-57 ENCs) are
  currently available for 13 000 km of inland
  waterways
• More than 2500 vessels are already equipped with
  Inland ENCs in Europe
• We have started to establish a digital Inland
  Register in accordance with the future IHO S-100
  (test bed)
• The new harmonized edition of the European Inland
  ECDIS standard has been presented to the Central
  Commission for Navigation on the Rhine and the
  RIS Committee of the EU and will be adopted in
  autumn

Status of harmonization

• The harmonized Encoding Guide for Inland ENCs is
  already used in some countries
• By mid 2007 all the ENCs in Europe and the US
  will be produced in accordance with the
  harmonized standard for Inland ENCs
