The current situation
There are currently a number of well established
Local Record Centres in the Yorkshire Humber
region.
  • What we do
  • Funding primarily from local authorities and
    other local sources.
  • Supporting local development control and
    providing local services.
  • Bespoke in-house solutions developed locally.
  • Founded on well established amateur recording
    bodies like YNU.
  • Significant taxonomic and data management
    expertise devolved locally.
  • Aspirations
  • Support amateur naturalist's community.
  • Develop regional best practice for common
functions and services such as Local Site
    Reporting.
  • Feed into regional strategies such as RSS.
  • Provide data to NBN Gateway.

3
The roadmap
  • Phase 1 - Harmonisation - Bring all the LRCs to
a level of both staffing and funding whereby they
are able to provide a suite of agreed core
services based on the NBN Core Services in
addition to any bespoke local services which they
currently provide. Implement common processes and
policies and commit to share data within the LRC
    community.
  • Phase 2 - Integration - Provide mechanisms for
the online delivery of shared data. These
delivery mechanisms will source data both within
the LRC network and from external sources such as
    NBNGateway and BARS.
  • Phase 3 - Optimisation - Provide added value,
increases in efficiency and / or cost savings
through sharing infrastructure and support costs.

4
YHEDN aims and objectives
  • To provide an efficient means of producing
    regional data products and services.
  • To improve the quality and usability of data
    through shared quality assurance standards.
  • To provide a means to interact with NBNGateway
    and the National Schemes Societies.
  • To provide LRCs access to regional funding
    streams.
  • To simplify the contractual relationships with
    key stakeholders (YNU, NE, EA..)?
  • To provide cost savings through developing
    services, contracts and processes once.
  • To provide cost savings through the use of shared
    infrastructure and support.
  • To develop an open data community whereby all
data donors will benefit through their
    partnership with the network

5
YHEDN services
  • Local naturalists and naturalist goups.
  • Data will be securely managed with a robust
    back-up strategy.
  • Data mapped over Google Earth or Google Maps.
  • Phenology and distributions compiled live from
available data to ease production of reports and
    publications.
  • Naturalists need only have a single contract with
    1 LRC.
  • Local authorities
  • Site based data searches draw data from all LRC
    databases aswell as NBN Gateway.
  • Multiple sites can be screened against protected
species and designated sites in a single click
  • Local site citations, species lists and
    management information can be compiled
    automatically.
  • GIS layers can be loaded live into MapInfo or
ArcGIS as a backdrop to in-house data.
  • Regional Bodies
  • YHEDN will compile regional datasets from LRC
    holdings.
  • National agencies and statutory duties
  • Engagement with NBN Gateway puts LRC data in
    national context

What we need now
  • Partners - The network is not only made up of the
local record centres but also the providers and
consumers of its data and so we need the support
and representation of these groups within the
    network.
  • Funding? - The network needs to be established
and run and ultimately hopes to provide regional
funding to support the local record centres
activities, allowing us to address significant
gaps in taxonomic and geographic coverage.
  • Support - At this stage what we would like is a
formal endorsement of the YHEDN project. We have
written a statement of support document which can
be signed without obligating organisations to
    provide funding or services.
  • We will use these statements to help sell the
network to possible funders and to establish the
level of need and level of desire for the
    network's services.
