3
  • Trash is burned in a large pit
  • Ash is taken to a special landfill for toxic ash
  • Steam made from burning the trash can be sold as
    energy

4
Incinerator ADVANTAGES
  • Reduces amount of trash by 60
  • No liability, no pests
  • Can sell energy created from steam
  • Less of a N.I.M.B.Y than open dump or sanitary
    landfill
  • Less odor than S.L.
  • Less Noise than S.L.
  • Doesnt require a lot of space

5
IncineratorDISADVANTAGES
  • COST
  • Air pollution - SO2- Acid Rain
  • Toxic Ash - Must use a small land fill to bury
    ash!
  • Not everything will burn (ex metals)
  • Doesnt encourage conservation
  • N.I.M.B.Y.

6
ALTERNATIVES FOR WASTE DISPOSAL
Recycling
A disposal method where you either reduce, reuse
or recycle the waste products
7
How it Works
  • You take your items to a recycling center
(sometimes theyll even pick it up for you)
  • They sort the items and send them to specific
factories to be reused (glass to a bottling
company, paper to a paper mill, etc)
  • The town doesnt actually DO anything with the
items just sends them to the appropriate places

8
Recycling Advantages
  • No, or little cost
  • Saves resources
  • Saves space
  • Payback is long term
  • No liability
  • No odor
  • No pests
  • Not unsightly
  • No N.I.M.B.Y

9
Recycling Yard waste by Composting
  • Take food scraps (except meat) and yard waste,
and place them in a covered bin outside. Allow in
    air and moisture.
  • Microorganisms grow, decompose the scraps and
    yard waste.
  • Mix back into your yard

10
Recycling Disadvantages
  • Not everything can be recycled
  • Inconvenient
  • Price you get for recycling fluctuates
  • Loads can be contaminated
  • Some things have a lower quality than original
  • Some things are more costly to make than
    original
  • LAZY/SHORT SIGHTED PEOPLE

  • Incinerator (w/ small landfill) 3 million

15
Other Options
  • Rocket to the Moon
  • Each Rocket costs 34,000,000
  • Payload costs 10,000 per pound
  • 5 lb trash per person x 5,000 people in Bayview
  • 25,000 lbs of trash per day
  • 25,000 lbs x 10,000 per lb. 250,000,000
    payload per day
  • 250,000,000 payload 34,000,000 rocket
