  • The Waste and Emissions Trading (WET) Act 2003
    implements Articles 5(1) and (2) of the EU
    Landfill Directive 1999/31/EC. The EU Directive
    was put in place to assist with the reduction of
    greenhouse gas emissions, such as methane from
    waste management activities. In order to reduce
    amounts of waste going to landfill, the Act
    provides for England, Scotland, Wales and
    Northern Ireland to set up landfill allowances
    schemes to meet their share of the UK Targets.
