  • You are ready to begin a session on your
    computer.

Finding the power buttons

Understanding your mouse
  • You want to know which mouse button to click.

This is the right mouse button.
  • The left button aligns
  • with your index finger and is the one
  • that you use to launch an application.
  • When you are told to double click on
  • an icon, use this button.
  • The right button aligns with your
  • middle finger and is used to expose
  • hidden menus attached to an icon.

This is the left mouse button.

Windows 2000 and the Novell Login
  • You want to know the correct way to type your
    user name.
  • After you power up the computer and the monitor,
    this window will appear.
  • You will need to enter your Username and
    Password, just as you see it above.
  • .last name.staff.north Type your password, and
    click OK.
  • A white screen with black text will appear next.
  • It tells you to which server(s) you are
    attached. You dont have to select them, nor do
    you have to log onto a separate server for
    printing.

The Network Application Launcher (NAL) Window
  • You want to know the best way to launch an
    application.
  • The NAL window will automatically launch when
    you log in.
  • It floats over the top of the desktop space
    allowing you to see icons that represent the
    applications you have access to on the
    computers harddrive or network.
  • To launch an application, lay your mouse on the
    picture and double click the left button.

Using the Start button to launch an application.
  • Your NAL window doesnt launch the application.
  • If an application refuses to launch, you can take
    your mouse to the Start button on the left side
    of the system tray, point, click, and hold.
  • Drag up to Programs and allow the submenus to
    expose themselves, and find the application that
    you are looking for.
  • Release your mouse button on the application that
    you select.

The Desktop
  • You want to understand what you see on the
    monitor.
  • The icons sitting on the blue background on the
    left of your monitor represent containers that
    store applications, network settings, and
    application shortcuts.
  • The horizontal grey bar at the bottom of your
    screen is called the system tray.
  • Looking at the tray from left to right, youll
    find the Start button, which is where you will go
    to finally log off when your session is done,
    three icons that are associated with Internet
    Explorer, the (minimized) Novell Application
    Launcher Window, explained on the slide 5, and
    finally the grouping on the right are icons that
    represent control panel settings.

This entire screen is called the desktop.

AccessingGroupWise
  • You want to read/send your email.
  • Find the Groupwise 6 icon in the NAL window.
  • Lay your mouse on top of it, and double click the
    left mouse button.
  • The GroupWise Password window above will appear.
    Type in your GW password. Remember, it is case
    sensitive.

Accessing GroupWise
  • Reading email.
  • This is the default (normal) view for your
    mailbox. It is divided into two panes. The
    left one shows all of the compartments available
    to you in GW. The right one is an expanded view
    of the selected compartment. Notice here, that
    the mailbox is outlined on the left or selected,
    and you are seeing into the mailbox in the right
    panel.
  • To read mail, lay your mouse on a letter, and
    double click the left mouse button.

Accessing GroupWise
  • Sending email.
  • After you have read the mail, you can click on
  • Reply, which automatically re-addresses your
    mail.
  • Forward, which will send it to a third party.
  • Delete, which throws it in your trash. You will
    still need to Empty Trash periodically. You can
    do that through the Edit Menu or by Right
    clicking on the Trash can and selecting Empty
    Trash.

Accessing Internet Explorer
  • You want to read school news.
  • Find the Internet Explorer icon in the NAL
    window, lay your mouse on it, and double click
    the left mouse button.
  • Scrolling down will expose News items and other
    links on the left. The link for WebAccess for
    GroupWise is also on the left, or you can type
    this address in the Address bar
  • northgw.mail.ops.org
  • The Daily Bulletin printed here is the
    Student Bulletin. The Staff Bulletin is sent to
    you in GW.

Accessing Microsoft Word
  • You want to create a document for printing.
  • Find the Microsoft Word icon in the NAL window,
    double click on it with your left mouse button.
  • The cursor will blink in the upper left-hand
    corner of the page, awaiting your input.
  • The paper clip help guide in the lower right-hand
    portion of the screen will assist you as you
    work, or you can click the X in his box to put
    him away.

  • You are ready to Save.
  • You want to save your work as frequently as every
    ten minutes. Take your mouse up to the File Menu
    and drag down to Save..
  • Direct the dialog boxes to your folder on the
    network. See the following two slide.

  • You are in the process of saving your work.
  • Click your mouse on the pop-up menu icon shown
    here to expose the path to save files.
  • Drag down to your folder on North1\Vol11\Staff\You
    r Name

  • 1 Make sure that your name is in the Save in
    window
  • 2 Give your file a name. It will automatically
    pick up the first line of typing on the page as
    the file name. You can change that by dragging
    that file name and typing over it.
  • 3 Click the Save button.

  • You are ready to print your document.
  • Save one final time before printing. Take your
    mouse to the File Menu and drag your mouse down
    to Print.
  • You do not need to worry about being logged onto
    the correct server to print. That was set up for
    you, and the mapping to the proper servers
    happened as you logged in.

  • You are in the process of printing your document.
  • In this pop-up menu, you can select the printer
    that you want the job to come out on.
  • You can select the number of copies and the page
    range.
  • Click OK when you have set all of those
    parameters.

Shutting Down
  • You are ready to end your computer session.
  • Take your mouse to the Start button, click and
    hold the left button, and drag to Shut Down.
  • Drag to Log off yourname.
