6 Endowments
- Named chairs, professorships and fellowships will
carry with them annual stipends (chairs 6000
professorships 4000 fellowships 2000) derived
from endowment funds that will underwrite
research, travel, and other professional costs. - Holders of these appointments will access these
funds through Office of the Assistant Dean for
Research. Named chairs and professors will
receive funds in lieu of money normally allocated
to them for professional travel, etc., from the
divisions general operating budget. - Of the total stipend, academic divisions will
retain 1000 in the case of chairs and 500 in
the case of professorships to encourage
scholarship among faculty within the division. - Nominations for these positions should be
submitted to the chairperson of the division of

7Named Chair Qualifications
- A named chair is reserved for
- a distinguished teacher/scholar who holds the
rank of professor. - those who have a reputation that extends beyond
the Pepperdine community. - a holder of a named chair is reviewed every five
years by the Rank, Tenure, and Promotion
Committee. - a holder of the named chair retains the position
until she or he leaves the university or retires.

appointed for a term of five years only and
cannot succeed herself or himself in the
position. A limited term permits the named
professorship to circulate within the college.

11Named Fellow Qualifications
- A named fellowship is reserved for
- pre-tenured assistant professors who offer
evidence of becoming outstanding scholars. - those who seek assistance to complete major
research projects. - fellows are appointed for one year, although they
are eligible for successive appointments (but no
more than two in succession).
12Deans Research Grant
- Grants ranging in amount up to 1,500 will be
made available to faculty to fund needs directly
related to research activity. These needs may be
equipment and/or supplies, statistical
consulting, travel to libraries and/or
collections, etc. - Proposals should clearly specify how the money is
to be used and how it will advance the faculty
members research. - Proposals are due November 1st.

13Harris Manchester College Summer Research
Institute
- With the support of the Provost, Pepperdine
University will continue participating in the
Harris Manchester College Summer Research
Institute in the summer of 2009. - One faculty member will be able to pursue their
research interests for a period of one week
during the summer in the academic environment of
Harris Manchester College in the University of
Oxford. - The individual will be provided with en-suite
accommodation, all meals and access to the
College and University libraries during the week
and will also be accredited with the status of
Visiting Fellow of Harris Manchester College.
Airfare is covered by the Office of the Associate
Provost for Research. - Proposals are due November 1st.

Dyron Daughrity (2007), and Constance Fulmer

14 Release Time
- Release Time is a one course reduction in load to
pursue scholarly activities. - Faculty not eligible for a 3/2 load may apply.

15Seaver Research Council Grant
- Funds for these grants will be derived in part
from indirect costs generated from externally
funded grant proposals and from funds designated
for the Council from within the University. - SRC Grants can provide financial support related
to scholarly activities including travel
expenses, costs related to publications and
stipends for under-graduate research students.
Proposals that describe projects that are
collaborative/interdisciplinary in nature are
encouraged. - Faculty are encouraged to use SRC Grants as
"seed" money where supported work could
potentially provide the framework for a grant
proposal to an external agency. - SRC Grants typically range from 1,000 to 4,500.

- SURP Goals
- to develop an active program of undergraduate
research in all disciplines - to teach students the common elements of the
research process by actively engaging them in a
research study - to encourage students to pursue careers in
research and - to provide time and incentive for faculty members

17Student Requirements
- Students will be required to register for a
minimum of 4 units of 599 (Directed Studies)
credit and may register for up to a total of 8
units over the 12-week session. - Students will receive a 4-unit tuition
scholarship.

Undergraduate Research - CDIUR
- This program involves undergraduate research and
emphasizes students and faculty working together
from diverse disciplines. - Who is involved?
- One research cluster that includes one faculty
member from three different disciplines. Each of
the three faculty members chooses one student

20Visiting Scholars Program
- This initiative will permit each division to
bring a leading scholar to campus for a two or
three day visit on an every other year rotating
basis. The divisions will select this person. - The visiting scholar will
- lead seminars and hold meetings with faculty and
students where they might suggest innovations in
teaching, - make curriculum suggestions, provide advice on
faculty-student research or grant writing - and encourage the formation of broader,

21Corporations, Foundations and Sponsored Programs
- This office secures support from independent,
family, and community foundations from corporate
foundations and giving programs and from federal
agencies. - The Office of Corporations, Foundations and
Sponsored Programs is engaged throughout the
University in two kinds of grant-seeking
institutional and faculty projects. Faculty
members will be primarily interested in the
second kind grant-seeking for individual
