Source C
  • BLOODY SUNDAY WITNESS APPEARS

2
  • A witness had told the Bloody Sunday inquiry
into the deaths of 13 men in Londonderry that he
heard soldiers talk beforehand of clearing the
Bog. Daniel Porter claimed he was told of the
plan by off-duty troops in a pub in England and
later linked it to the military operation in
Derrys Bogside on January 30 1972, when 13 men
    were shot dead.

Does he say which troops he spoke to? Does he say
when he was talking to them? How reliable is the
source.
3
The Parachute Regiment dont use tanks they are
an infantry unit. Landrovers and armoured cars
yes.
  • Mr Porter was the first of up to 1,500 witnesses
set to take the stand in the mammoth inquiry, I
remember on night they started talking, saying
that they would be going to Derry to clear the
Bog, by which I understood that they would be
clearing away the barricades. They said they
would be landing with tanks. I got the
impression they would be going to Northern
    Ireland pretty shortly.

What does clear the bog actually mean? What
does he think? Is it therefore reliable or are
their other versions?
4
This source is different from the other two as it
focuses on witnesses and not forensic evidence.
  • An ITN news report broadcast on 28 November 2000

Examining Source C
  • Supports the interpretation that the army was
premeditated in its actions on Bloody Sunday
clearing the Bog and therefore responsible.

6
Reliable or not reliable
  • Reliable
  • Apparent witness to the soldiers movements before
    Bloody Sunday.
  • Links in well with the context of Bloody Sunday
    mounting Army casualties.
  • Not motive to lie about such an event
  • Not reliable
  • Classic hearsay evidence there is no proof that
    the event took place.
  • No clear identification of the unit involved or
    when the conversation took place.
  • Talking about it 28 years later how reliable is
    it?
