Title: Which is the odd one out

1
Which is the odd one out?
2
What is the greenhouse effect?
See the next slide
3
Discuss this!
4
Some of this heat is then trapped by the
atmosphere.
Solar radiation
The Earth absorbs some of the suns energy and
gives it out in the form of heat.
5
In your jotters make a simple copy of that
diagram showing the greenhouse effect it is
shown again on the next slide!

Copy and complete the following paragraph using
the words below to help you.

The _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ allows heat in. It then
acts like the glass in a _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

The exact causes of global warming are
complicated. Most scientists believe it is
mainly due to an increase in greenhouse gases in
the atmosphere. These gases include CARBON
DIOXIDE and METHANE.
9
CFC gases from refriger-ators
Clearing and burning trees releases Carbon
Dioxide gas
How do these create greenhouse gases? Click to
reveal the connection! Then copy the notes.

Burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) in power
stations and factories

windy cattle release methane as they digest the
grass.
Increased levels of methane from waste dumps

  • Some likely effects of global warming include
  • Weather becoming more unpredictable and stormy.
  • Some crops benefit from warming, but in some
areas drought will reduce the amount of crops.
  • New pests and diseases could spread in warm,
    humid conditions.
  • Various plants and animals e.g. polar bear and
mountain gorilla disappearing due to loss of
    habitat.
  • Rising sea levels caused by melting ice caps will
mean flooding in low lying coastal areas.

Answer in your jotters- 1. Why will global
warming result in rising sea levels? 2. Note down
two other likely effects of global warming?
