  • A call number is a books address.
  • Call numbers can either be all letters or a
    combination of letters and numbers
  • The standard call number for fiction books is a
capital F followed by the first three letters
    of the AUTHORS LAST NAME.
  • Most nonfiction books have a 3-digit number
followed by the first three letters of the
    authors last name.
  • Biographies autobiographies differ in that they
have a 3 digit number followed by the SUBJECTS
    last name.

Call Numbers Prefixes
  • Some materials can ONLY be checked out by
    teachers.

Fiction Shelf Arrangement
  • Books by Susan Cooper and by Caroline B. Cooney
all have the call number F COO.
  • All of Caroline B. Cooneys books will come on
    the shelf before Coopers, because

COONEY comes before COOPER alphabetically.
10
Fiction Shelf Arrangement
  • If an author has more than one title, his/her
    books are
  • shelved in alphabetical order of the title. For
    example,
  • Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Harry
  • Potter and the Sorcerers Stone both have the
    call number
  • F ROW, but Halfblood Prince comes first on the
    shelf.

11
Nonfiction Shelf Arrangement
  • Nonfiction books are arranged in number order. A
book with the call number 292 DOL comes before a
book with the call number 300 RAS.
  • Nonfiction call numbers are assigned according
to the Dewey Decimal System. Each number stands
    for a different subject.

12
Nonfiction Shelf Arrangement
  • The Dewey Decimal call number is just like a
    decimal number in math class.

133.01 BOR
133.1 BOR
133.2 BOR
133.21 BOR
  • Smaller numbers come before larger numbers on the
    shelf.

13
Nonfiction Shelf Arrangement
  • If the first part of the nonfiction call number
    is the same,
  • books are arranged alphabetically by the letters.
