Title: The relationship of population distribution and transport development in Hong Kong
1The relationship of population distribution and
transport development in Hong Kong
2Population pattern of Hong Kong
3Total population in each region
4Population density of Hong Kong
5Population density of Kowloon
6Population density of New Territories
7Conclusion
- From 1991 to 2001
- As the new town planning, more people have move
to the New Territories. - E.g. the population of New Territories had
increased while the population of Kowloon and
Hong Kong had decreased. - Yuen Long, Sai Kung have the greater population
growth when compare with those in Kowloon.
8Hong Kong Major Transport Route
9Transport Routes
- Hong Kong transport network is divided into two
types - Road Network
- Rail Network
10Roads Figures
- Hong Kong's roads have one of the highest vehicle
densities in the world. - 1,938 kilometres of roads - 433 kilometres on
Hong Kong Island, 448 kilometres in Kowloon and
1,057 kilometres in the New Territories. - The high vehicle density, combined with the
difficult terrain and the dense building
development, imposes a constant challenge to the
road builders to cope with the ever increasing
transport demands. - There are 11 major road tunnels, 1,088 flyovers
and bridges, 620 footbridges and 372 subways to
keep people and goods on the move.

12Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Corridor
- Project Objective
- Alleviate the nearly saturated existing boundary
crossings at Lok Ma Chau, Sha Tau Kok and Man Kam
To, but will also satisfy the future demand. - Enhance trade between Hong Kong and Southern
China, facilitate further economic development
particularly in areas of finance, logistics and
tourism, and strengthen the position of Hong Kong
as the hub of the Pearl River Delta area. - Description
- Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Corridor is a
5.0-kilometre long dual 3-lane carriageway of
which the Hong Kong section is 3.2-kilometre.
Spanning across Deep Bay, the Hong Kong section
links up the northern end of Deep Bay Link at
Ngau Hom Shek with the Mainland section of the
Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Corridor

15Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macao Bridge
- Project Descripton
- The project includes The entire Hong Kong -
Zhuhai - Macao Bridge (HZMB) comprises the
Zhujiang Section from the landing point at
Zhuhai/Macao to the boundary of the Hong Kong
Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and the
Hong Kong Section (HKS) from the boundary of
HKSAR to the landing point at Lantau west. The
North Lantau Highway Connection (NLHC) connects
the landing point to the existing North Lantau
Highway at the Airport Island. This link will
also be further extended and linked up with the
North Lantau Highway at Tai Ho as traffic builds
up in the longer term. - Project Programme
- According to the current programme, consultants
would be appointed to undertake an Investigation
assignment for the NLHC and HKS. Construction
works are expected to commence as quickly as
possible. The tentative completion date is 2007
to 2010, but this is subject to confirmation
pending findings of relevant technical studies.
16Preliminary Design of HZMB
17Railways in Hong Kong
- Railways are environmentally friendly and
efficient mass carriers.Hong Kong's railways now
account for more 30 of daily domestic passenger
travel, over 80 of cross - boundary passenger
trips and a limited amount of freight movement
between HK and the mainland - The new transport strategy has reaffirmed the
need to rely on railways as the backbone of Hong
Kong's transport system

21The relationship between the population
distribution and the transport development
22The relationship between the population
distribution and the transport development
- positive relationship
- the higher the population density, the higher the
level of transport development, vice versa - when transport routes extend to the undeveloped
region, people will be attracted to move there - increasing population in certain areas gives
potentials for the transport to extend
23- the towns are developed along the main transport
routes such as MTR, KCR, etc - OR the transport routes are extended along the
new towns - the population distribution and the transport
development are inter-related
24e.g. Sha Tin, Mong Kok, Yuen Long, etc
25Case Study (I)
26Tung Chung New Town
- Originally, Tung Chung was a rural and
undeveloped region which had about 1000 people of
population only. Fishing activites were found. - In the past, there is only simple transport means
such as ferry to link up Tung Chung with the
heart of the city. - Today, Tung Chung has been the 9th new town in
Hong Kong. The population of Tung Chung increased
to about 70000.
27The first phase of Public housing blocks in the
Tung Chung New Town.
28The reasons explaining the rapid growth of
population
- Hong Kong New Airport Core Programme in 1997
- Development of New international Airport in Chap
Lap KoK
29The 10 core projects of Hong Kong New Airport
Core Programme
30- Tung Chung new town was designed as a support
community for the new airport, providing
residential accommodation and community and
commercial facilities at a site on Lantau
adjacent to the airport.
31Connected transport network
- MTR Tung Chung Line
- Lantau Fixed Crossing (Tsing Ma Bridge, Kap Shui
Mun Bridge, Ma Wan Viaduct ) - North Lantau Expressway
- Route 3
- Buses routes including external services from
North Lantau to urban areas, and internal shuttle
services.

33Conclusion
- With the urban planning and the more advanced
transport system, people are attracted and
willing to move to the Tung Chung New Town from
the urban areas. It is because the accessibility
is highly increased and it is very convenient for
the people to go to their working place in other
parts of Hong Kong.
34Case study (II)
35Yuen Long
- Although Yuen Long is far away from the CBD about
20 km, its accessibility is very high due to the
improvement of transport network, and it
increases population distribution in Yuen Long. - Population increases from 150,000 to 540,000 in
the decade.
36Transport routes
- Route 2 (Lok Ma Chau Ngau Tau Kok)
- 54.5 km long
- Route 3 (Yuen Long Sai Ying Pun)
- 27.7 km long
- LTR
- 31.75km, connect with West Rail
- West Rail (Tuen Mum West Kowloon)
- 30.5km, from Tuen Mum to West Rail, stations in
Yuen Long , Tsuen Wan, Mei Foo, and so on
37Comparisons
38Reasons for increasing population
- Cheap and extensive flat land in Yuen Long
provides abandoned residential land - Reducing pollution problem
- Good transport network reduce the friction of
distance - For many people, Tin Shui Wai is rather remote
from most urban centres in Hong Kong
39- Yuen Long is the largest settlement, while Tin
Shui Wai is the second largest compared with
other smaller settlement in the regions - It is well-linked with other transport network
- With the opening of the West Rail and Light Rail,
the Light Rail network would be extended to link
up with the newly developed area in Tin Shui Wai
as well as West Rail.
40Conclusion
- With the high accessibility in Yuen Long, people
are willing to live there as it is convenient.
And the living environment is better than the
city centre since there are a lot of pollutions
in the CBD. - Therefore, with the push factors in the new town,
the population will increase rapidly.
41Case study (III)
42Kowloon City
- Kowloon City is located near to the CBD, but the
population distribution is decreasing from
403,000 to 369,000 in the decade.
43Kowloon City
- Reasons
- removing of the airport
- not willing to live as the accessibility
decreased - Conculsion
- The population decreases rapidly since 1997
