  • Background A major programme of reform in
the way we educate our 14-19 year olds in
    England.
  • Begun in 2005, with the Government White Paper
on 1419 Education and Skills For some, the
national curriculum causes them to switch off,
even though they may do well at GCSEs. For them,
the curriculum and qualifications do not provide
a route to improving their life chances and they
may drop out of further study at, or shortly
    after, the age of 16.

3
  • The Key Recommendation
  • A brand new qualification
  • The Diploma (known previously as the 14-19
    Specialised Diploma).
  • Occupationally based. To be offered alongside
    -(traditional)
  • Academic route (GCSEs/GCE A-levels). -(more
    recent) Vocational route (Young/Advanced
Apprenticeships). Aimed principally at 14-19 year
    olds.
  • Available at Levels 1, 2 and 3. In 14 different
    subjects, or Lines of Learning.

4
  • The Third Way but with built in flexibility
the opportunity to switch across from one route
    to another at any stage.

  • Starting Vision To equip learners with the world
class skills and knowledge necessary to make a
valuable contribution to the UKs sport and
leisure industry and its forthcoming 2012 and
2020 targets. Starting Definition The Sport
and Leisure Diploma will help learners
principally aged 14-19 acquire an understanding
of the sport and leisure industry and the
employability skills its employers most value
from all new entrants to the sector, while at the
same time allowing individuals an opportunity to
progress within education and/or their chosen
    career.

technically qualified staff. They do not replace
Apprenticeships or YAs. They are not instead of
A levels or GCSEs they sit alongside. They are
not only for those who cant ! We arent writing
