EE441/42 Introduction Overview
2
  • Introductions
  • What is Senior Design About?
  • Attributes of Successful Projects
  • Senior Design Policy and Grading
  • Course Schedule
  • Project Proposals and Advisor Contract

3
What is Senior Design all about?
3
  • Senior Design experience at Penn is in two
    semesters.
  • EE441 (0.5 cu) and EE442 (1.0 cu).
  • Open ended, unlike any class-room course.
  • Penn Senior Design is a transition between
student life and being a professional on the
    first job.
  • Title of Senior Design project is important item
    to list ones CV.
  • Integrate Penn education in a year long design
    project.
  • Students learn to take responsibility for their
    successes and mistakes.

4
What is Senior Design all about?
4
  • Learning by experience.
  • Grow technical depth and breadth.
  • Project/time management and setting realistic
    goals
  • Working with others in a team to achieve common
    objectives
  • Writing professional reports
  • Making professional viewgraph presentations
  • Other Opportunities.
  • Awards
  • The sky is the limit.

5
Successful Projects have the Following Attributes
5
  • The student team brings to the project a combined
knowledge base and skill set that spans a
significant portion of the knowledge and skills
    needed to do the project.
  • No project will have 100 coverage
    knowledge/skills.
  • However, when the team has little of the
prerequisite knowledge/skills to do the project,
the project starts with a significant penalty.
  • The selected project is a good match to the
    expertise of the project advisor.
  • It is a plus when the advisor has a substantive
vested interest in the successful outcome of the
project, e.g. the design project is supporting
the advisor's research or it will be used by the
advisor in one of his or her courses.
  • Students are highly motivated, self starting and
    persistent.

6
EE441/442 POLICY
6
  • Senior design project teams comprised of 2 to 3
    students.
  • Project selection done with consult of project
    advisors and course instructors.
  • Qualified advisors outside EE Penn advisors are
    allowed, if approved.
  • Attendance at course meetings (in class and with
    project advisor) is required.
  • Each student must maintain a project Lab
    Notebook.
  • All relevant information is to be recorded in the
    Lab Notebook.
  • Each page is to be dated and signed by student.
  • A financial proposal or budget is submitted as
part of the the 1st Technical Report.
  • Any project requiring funds greater than 75 per
student must receive approval before any
    expenditure commitments are made.

7
