Sport in London (SSA)
  • 58 of organisations in London have had vacancies
    (5,840) in the last 12 months
  • 22 of companies in the region have had hard to
    fill vacancies in the last 12 months
  • 38 of organisations with vacancies found them
    hard to fill
  • Hard to fill vacancies account for 1 of
    employment and 42 of all vacancies
  • 16 of organisations had skill shortage vacancies
    whilst 74 of organisations with hard-to-fill
    vacancies attributed them to a skill shortage

The South East Picture of Active Leisure
  • Contributed 1.38 billion to the South East
    economy in 2004
  • The sector employs over 88,900 paid employees in
    5 sub-sectors
  • The South East accounts for 19 of sector active
    leisure employment in England
  • Sector includes paid workers, self-employment and
    unpaid voluntary work in over 5,700 public,
    private, voluntary and not-for-profit
    organisations
  • The sector is reliant on volunteers. However,
    estimates vary from 50,000 to 500,000

The South East Picture of Active Leisure
  • Paid employment in the South East will grow by
    31 to over 117,000 people by 2014 (modest
    forecast)
  • Other forecasts suggest our sectors workforce
    may double by 2020 owing to the increase in
    participation
  • 28,000 new paid jobs are expected (min) to 2014
    (annual growth of around 3).
  • There is also a high level of staff turnover (ave
    14) in the sector. By 2014, over 145,000 paid
    jobs will need to be filled as a result of people
    leaving their jobs.  Therefore 172,395 jobs will
    need filling.

Active Leisure Skills Gaps and Shortages
  • 52 of establishments report a vacancy
  • 37 of sector organisations with a vacancy found
    them hard-to-fill
  • 61 of organisations with a hard-to-fill vacancy
    attributed it to a skills shortage reasons (lack
    of experience, qualifications or skills required)
  • 12 of organisations report skill shortage
    vacancies
  • 32 considered they had a skills gap.

Young Apprenticeships
  • New DfES initiative started in September 2004
  • Aimed at 14 to 16 year old high achievers
  • 2 year programme funding (LSC) 4k per
    individual
  • 3 days a week in mainstream education following
    core National Curriculum subjects
  • 2 days a week in college and/or workplace
  • Level 2 vocational qualification as the core
    offer
  • NVQ Level 1 for structuring the work experience
  • Other smaller L1/L2 qualifications as options
    (e.g. JSLA)
  • 50 days minimum spent in work placement
  • DfES led DCMS supported YST partners

YA in Sports Management, Leadership and Coaching
  • Started in Cohort 2 September 2005
  • 2 partnerships (50 pupils)
  • Cohort 3 September 2006
  • 13 partnerships (350 pupils) - 11 new
    partnerships across England
  • Cohort 4 September 2007
  • 48 partnerships (1000 pupils) 37 new
    partnerships across England
  • Partnerships identified by SkA or themselves or
    YST
  • Each partnership contains a range of schools, FE
    or WBL providers, EBPs, LEAs, Connexions, 14/19
    Leads, employers

AASE
  • AASE has been designed to meet the needs of young
    people (aged 16-18) who have the realistic
    potential to achieve excellence in their sport
    and are seeking to perform at the highest level
    as their main career goal
  • Notionally taking two-years to complete, the AASE
    framework will provide for the first time a
    structured national training and development
    route, across all sports, for talented young
    athletes, many of whom may go to represent their
    country on the world stage

AASE where are we now??
  • AASE currently being delivered across Premier
    League and Football Leagues Golf Rugby Union
    Cricket Aquatics and Tennis
  • SkillsActive and Sussex Downs College in Brighton
    have successfully bid for 900k ESF for Olympic
    and Paralympic sports and AASE aquatics,
    tennis, athletics, triathlon and judo
  • We will be looking for other sports to
    incorporate AASE into their education programmes
    in the future and welcome discussions with any
    interested partie
  • 2000 athletes on programme!!
  • LSC Investment of 6m per annum
