  • Photomontage is the process (and result) of
making a composite photograph by cutting and
joining a number of other photographs. The
composite picture was sometimes photographed so
that the final image is converted back into a
seamless photographic print. A similar method,
although one that does not use film, is realized
today through image-editing software. This latter
technique is referred to by professionals as
"compositing", and in casual usage is often
    called photoshopping

Romare Bearden (1911 - 1988) Spent his youth in
New York, growing up with the Harlem Renaissance
unfolding around him. Studying in Paris and New
York, he became one of Americas premiere artists
of the mid- 20th century. Combining painting and
drawing with scraps of paper and cloth, he
produced a uniquely American take on the collage.
With jazz as much an influence as Picasso and
Braque, Bearden explored themes and stories from
his early rural childhood as well as contemporary
urban life.

Homework Task 1
  • Make a montage of one of your final ideas, using
photocopied information from your sketchpads, or
    your own images.
  • You will need a glue stick and scissors. Make
sure that you plan out your design and work from
    the background to the foreground.
  • This can be as small or as big as you like.
  • Bring in a glue stick for next week.

23
Extension Work
  • Make a Cubist version of your final piece, using
the idea of putting a number of images of the
same thing together, after cutting several
pictures of it up and re-arranging it again.
  • (Mr Hearn has some examples of the Cathedral,
    which took about an hour)
