  • What are they?
  • What do they look like?

Advisory Boards What are they?
  • 15-20 local business leaders, primarily (but not
    exclusively) from Academy-theme industry, who
    meet regularly, and provide various resources for
    your Academy
  • Resources include (but are not limited to)
  • Classroom participation (including presentations,
    coaching, judging competitions, etc.)
  • Mentoring, job shadowing
  • Paid internships
  • Funding (scholarships, field trips, etc.)
  • Professional development for educators
  • Assistance with student recruitment
  • Advocacy
  • Academy Director, other school staff/personnel,
    and a student or two, should also sit on AB

Advisory Boards What do they look like?
  • Chair, Vice- (or Co-) Chair, Secretary, Treasurer
  • Monthly meetings (following Roberts Rules)
  • Written by-laws, standing agenda, written and
    distributed minutes
  • Role-call, reports from various members, next
    steps, majority voting
  • Chair runs the meetings
  • Academy Director reports on current state of
    program/school
  • Academy student(s) report on current state of
    class(es)
  • Committees, suggested but not limited to the
    following, report out on attainment of goals
    established during strategic planning
  • Internships
  • Fundraising
  • Advocacy, Promotion and Public Relations
  • Student Recruitment
  • Student Activities
  • Board Recruitment

  • Envision, Design, Form, Start
  • Create a Vision for your team
  • What will your AB look like 2-3 years from now?
  • What are the ways in which the AB members will
    offer support and interact with students?
  • Recruit your champion
  • Local business leader, acts as temporary Chair
  • AB takes on personality of Chair, so find a
    spark plug!
  • Hold a recruitment event
  • Breakfast, luncheon, after-school reception
  • Bring students to speak and help recruit

  • Call local business leaders and set up meetings
  • Bring students with you
  • Bring champion or other AB member with you
  • Bring WIIFMs with you
  • Make a presentation at regular meetings of
  • Chamber of Commerce
  • Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, other club meetings
  • Professional associations (bankers, CPAs, etc.)
  • Ask parents for their involvement and referrals

  • Review Academy needs and assign to Committees
  • Form Committees and elect Committee Chairs
  • Set up regular monthly meeting schedule

  • Develop, Grow, Sustain
  • Involve AB members with students
  • Mentoring, job shadowing, classroom visits,
    luncheons

  • Recognize, reward and renew commitment of AB
    members
  • Recognition breakfast or luncheon
  • Photo opportunities with students
  • Thank you letters from students cc to
    supervisors
  • Thank you letters from Principal to company
    supervisors
  • Promote their good work and recognize the results
    of their efforts in the local press / media
