Hondo?) 1806 - defined a neutral groundwhich
was a large chunk of the piney woodsof East
Texas and Louisiana Area had no government and

East Texas south of the Red River Bowie, Cass,
Franklin,Titus Red River Counties to be a part
of Arkansas territory

paid taxes to Arkansas. 1829 matters made worse
when US claimed Sabine Neches rivers names were
reversed (Cypess) giving US more land 1836

Manifest Destiny Justification for westward
movement save, enlighten and improve the life of
the Indian. Or, just demonize and destroy
him! Was the war with Mexico a just war? Compare
the nations of the US and Mexico in 1936.
17
US a great need to expand, high population
growth from birth and immigration. Destiny to
spread democracy to all capable of governing
themselves. Two big economic depressions 1818
1839. West land was cheap or free, 1820-1850, 4
million people moved to western territories.
Mexico won independence in 1821, economy
devastated, politically unstable, could not
occupy the lands acquired from Spain with
immigrants, could not protect its borders. System
of government did not encourage immigration to
new land. Battles with Native Americans somewhat
discouraging.
