Entry Level RequirementsBy Date of Hire
  • You must be 21 years of age
  • You must be a United States Citizen
  • You must be a resident of Trumbull County
  • You must possess a valid Ohio motor vehicle
    operators license
  • Have NO previous criminal Felony convictions
  • Have NO previous criminal convictions of any
    misdemeanor that required a jail sentence or
    involved issues of moral turpitude
  • Have NO domestic violence convictions
  • Educational and/or military requirements and/or
    prior police experience
  • Must have a high school diploma/GED
  • Must have a valid Ohio Peace Officer
    Certification as required by section 109.77 of
    the Ohio Revised Code
  • Honorably discharged from active service in the
    United States Armed Forces (if applicable)

Testing Requirements
  • All candidates MUST meet entry level requirements
    to participate in the testing and selection
    process
  • All candidates MUST attend ALL scheduled
    activities unless specifically excused by the
    Chief of Police
  • Each candidate MUST pass each phase of the
    selection process to continue to the next phase

Selection Components
  • The selection process for the position of
    part-time Police Officer is comprised of the
    following components conducted in the listed
    order
  • Full Application
  • Background Investigation
  • Interview Panel
  • Conditional Job Offer
  • Controlled Substance/Drug Screening
  • Medical Examination
  • Psychological Examination
  • Final Interview
  • Probationary Appointment
  • Field Training

Background Investigation
  • Comprehensive background investigations will be
    conducted on all candidates being considered for
    hire. Some areas of the investigation include
  • Credit History
  • Employment History
  • Criminal History
  • Driving Record
  • Information Verification

Oral Interview
  • An Interview panel consisting of four members
    will be formed.
  • A Township Trustee
  • The Chief of Police
  • A Sergeant
  • A Union Representative
  • The interview will be conducted between the panel
    members and the applicant.
  • Interviews shall be conducted on an individual
    basis.
  • The Interview Process shall consist of three
    segments
  • The Oral Interview (460 points)
  • The Verbal Response Scenario (40 points)
  • The Written Response Scenario (20 points)
  • Applicants with a combined score of less that 80
    will not be given further consideration
  • The combined score will be utilized in descending
    order to determine the order of selection.

False Statements
  • Each candidate will be required to sign a
    statement acknowledging that he/she understands
    that falsifying, misrepresenting or withholding
    any information during any part of the
    application process, constitutes grounds for
    immediate removal from the hiring process
    whether discovered prior to or subsequent to the
    appointment of the candidate

Medical Testing/ Drug Screening
  • A complete medical examination and drug screening
    will be conducted by a licensed healthcare
    provider
  • Drug screening results that indicate the presence
    of a non-prescribed controlled substance or
    illegal drug will eliminate the candidate from
    the remainder of the process

Psychological Examination
  • The tests are administered by a licensed
    psychologist whom evaluates the candidates
    overall psychological stability as it is related
    to the work of a Police Officer.
  • The psychologist whom evaluates the candidates
    will provide a written opinion of the findings to
    the Department.

Appointment
  • Appointments will be made approximately 1 week
    prior to the beginning of Basic Recruit Training
    at The Connecticut Police Academy or regional
    academy
  • Newly hired personnel will participate in a
    realistic job preview prior to beginning of
    academy training
  • Recruits receive their regular base pay upon
    appointment. There is no reduction in salary or
    benefits while attending the academy
  • All recruits must pass the physical agility test
    again prior to admission into the academy

Field Training/Probation
  • The Field Training Program
  • Is initiated immediately upon appointment
  • Will last a minimum of 176 hours and a maximum of
    256 hours
  • If after the maximum time period, the trainees
    performance is unsuitable for normal patrol
    duties, the trainee will be terminated.
  • The probationary period for all new officers
    begins immediately upon appointment and lasts for
    a period of one year

Bazetta Police Department Composition
  • 10 Sworn Personnel
  • Chief
  • 2 Sergeants
  • 3 Full Time Officers
  • 4 Part-time Officers

Patrol Division
  • Upon completion of field training, new officers
    will be assigned to the Patrol Division and will
    rotate assignments through each of the three
    patrol shifts
  • Day 0700-1500
  • Afternoon 1500-2300
  • Night 2300-0700

Duties
  • All Bazetta Police Officers are expected to
    perform a full range of law enforcement services
    including but not limited to
  • Emergency response
  • Traffic law enforcement
  • Report writing and warrant preparation
  • Criminal investigations
  • Court testimony
  • Dispute resolution

Specialized Assignments
  • The Department has a number of specialized
    positions, including
  • Investigator
  • Field Training Officer
  • Training Officer
  • Firearms Training Officer
  • Community Relations Officer

Salary
  • The hourly rate for a Probationary Part-time
    Police Officers is 11.25 per hour.
  • There is the limited ability to supplement
    regular wages with extra duty jobs
